Title: Wiring Tutorial

Wiring Tutorial
  • Unit 25
  • Data Communications and Networks

2
Making UTP cables
  • In many situations you can used ready made UTP
    cables.
  • When wiring wall sockets and other special
situations it is useful to be able to make up UTP
cables, attaching RJ45 sockets and plugs to the
    cable.
  • This presentation shows how it can be done.

Twin RJ45 wall sockets

Tools needed
  • These are the tools you will need.
  • You will also probably need a flat-blade and a
    Phillips (cross head) screwdriver.

RJ45 plug crimping tool
110 Punch down tool (used for wiring sockets)
Cable cutter
4
Attaching an RJ45 plug to UTP cable
Start with a reel of UTP cable like this
Then place the cable cutter about 2cm down the
cable and rotate the cutter around the cable
once. This will cut off the outer sheath
5
Attaching an RJ45 socket
The UTP cable will now look like this. Notice how
pairs of inner cable are twisted together (hence
the name twisted pair). Why is this done?
To attach the RJ45 plug you need to untwist and
separate the individual wires
6
Attaching an RJ45 socket
If you are using a plug cover (strain hood) place
it the correct way around over the cable first.

To wire the RJ45 plug the individual coloured
wires must be in the correct order, as shown.

To attach the RJ45 plug you need to arrange the
wires neatly next to each other.

Attaching an RJ45 socket
Securing hook, on top.
Then slide the RJ45 plug over the wires, making
sure it is the correct way around.
Wires go in here, Green/white wire on the LEFT
side, Brown on the RIGHT
Metal pins, on bottom.
8
Attaching an RJ45 socket
Now carefully place the plug in the crimping
tool, making sure the wires dont slide out
Once the plug is in the crimping tool, squeeze
the handles to clamp the wires into the plug
9
Attaching an RJ45 socket
The finished plug. Give a gentle tug on the wire
to check it is firmly attached to the plug
10
Wiring a wall socket
  • To wire an RJ45 wall socket you must strip outer
sheath off the UTP cable and untwist the wires as
    before.
  • Unscrew to top plate off the socket to reveal the
connectors behind the RJ45 sockets. Wires connect
to the socket using a 110 connector block.
  • They should be colour coded or have an
instruction sheet which shows which colour cable
    to connect to which terminal.

Wiring a wall socket
Place the first wire in the slot

Then push the punch down tool over the slot the
correct way around and press down to push the
wire into the bottom of the slot
12
Wiring a wall socket
This shot clearly shows the punch down tool
pushing the wire into the slot, the tool has a
cutter which will cut the excess wire off the
left side of the connector as it is pushed down
Each of the 8 wires needs to be pushed into the
terminals in this way

Testing a UTP cable
Terminator
The cables you make should be tested to ensure
the wires are making contact with the socket or
plug and they are connected in the correct order.
This can be done with a cable tester
