Motivation Rationale

• Integrate DiGIR and BioCASe protocols.
• Provide greater interoperability between the
  existing biodiversity networks facilitating
  access to data, sharing software, etc.
• Similar to its predecessors (XML over HTTP, same
  kind of message structure, operations). Avoid
  drastic impact on existing software networks.

Publishing Software implementations

• PyWrapper Provider software originally used by
  the BioCASE network. Supports the first
  incarnation of TAPIR.
• DiGIR 2 New multi-protocol provider being
  developed by KU. Plans to offer TAPIR as one of
  the supported protocols.
• TAPIR Lite implementations ?

• Short term Biological collections, Natural
  History Museums, Observation data sources.
• Next Taxonomic databases, Biological descriptive
  data sources, others.

Consuming Software implementations

• GBIF indexer/aggregator TAPIR driver will be
  implemented as soon as a full TAPIR provider is
  available.
• Other components from DiGIR and BioCASE networks
  (client libraries, message brokers) are expected
  to support TAPIR.

• Biodiversity data portals and other specific
  agents (niche modeling tools, data cleaning
  frameworks, etc.).

• Any person or institution willing to share data
  according to a specific XML standard.

Market size potential customers

• Besides indexers, aggregators, brokers and
  portals, end users should be able to interact
  with provider services directly. TAPIR offers
  easier ways to communicate with the service
  (view operation other HTTP GET facilities).
  Direct browser interaction, usage of RSS clients,
  Google Earth, etc.

Success factors

• Recent initiative - not being used yet.
• Having a single protocol to access biodiversity
  data was the main motivation behind TAPIR
  should be more than enough to encourage its
  adoption.

Hurdles to adoption

• No available Software.
• Lack of documentation (formal specification, user
  guide, etc.).
