Title: Framing a Floor

1
Framing a Floor
  • Luke Rhine
  • Reservoir High School
  • Advanced Design Applications

2
Creating a Floor
  • All floors will look like the following unless
    using a slab foundation
  • When using a slab foundation the slab is the floor

3
Starting a Floor
  • The floor starts with a sill plate
  • The sill plate makes direct contact with the
    foundation
  • The house literally sits on the foundation

4
Floor Joists
  • Floor joists run perpendicular and parallel to
the sill plate and flooring frame
  • Floor Joists are to be spaced 24 oc

5
Posts
  • Posts are installed in the foundation to hold up
    the beam
  • The beam of the floor is a board (three pieces
thick) that runs down the center of the house
  • The beam supports the floor joists

6
Connecting the Joists to the Beam
  • Floor joists meet in the center above the beam
  • Most floors are better organized than the
    pictures to the right

7
Framing a Fire Place
  • This cantilevered section represents where a
    fireplace will eventually be installed

8
Laying the Subfloor
  • Once the floor is framed it is covered with
either ½ plywood or 5/8 OSB (oriented strand
    board)
  • The plywood or OSB is called the subfloor
