2Diseases Caused by Polluted Water
DONT DRINK THE WATER!!
3Water Borne Diseases in Texas
4Water QualityWater Pollution Resources
- Two general categories for water pollution
- Point Source
- Non-point Source.
5Water Pollution Sources
- Point Source Specific location where pollutants
are discharged. - Non-point Source Pollutants, which do not have a
single point of origin or specific outfall.
6Types of Toxicity
- Acute Toxicity is when a substance causes
immediate danger or death. - Chronic Toxicity Long-term effect of sub lethal
levels of substance which alters growth,
reproduction of development.
7Organisms Used as Indicators of Pollution.
- Aquatic organisms are put into two categories
- Tolerant- Tolerance to Pollution and are used as
indicator of polluted conditions in streams and
rivers. - Intolerant- Will not tolerate polluted water
conditions and are used to indicate a clean
stream or river.
8Polluted Stream
When a lot of tolerant and intermediate species
are present then that demonstrates bad water
quality.
9Healthy Stream
When a lot of intolerant species are present in a
stream or river that indicates that the water is
clean.
10Historic Causes of Water Contamination
- Surface and ground water contamination through
human and animal waste - Urban and Agricultural runoff, leaking
underground, storage tanks and septic tanks. - Industrial contamination with chemical and metals
11Drinking Water Quality Today
- 97 of Texas population is served by 6,697 public
water systems. (including community and
non-community) - In the year 2000 Texas was ranked 4th place in
water quality by The National Rural Water
Association - Texas is considered as superior by the TNRCC
12Health Effects
- 1997 and 1999 there were three waterborne
diseases diagnosed in Texas - July 1997 Texas had an outbreak of
Cryptosporidium - 1,400 residents were contaminated by polluted
water
13Different Types Of Bacteria
Spirilla Cocci
Streptococcus Bacilli
14Pathogenic Bacteria in Drinking Water
15Polluted Water Can Cause You To Become Ill From
- Measles
- Yellow Fever
- Dengue Fever
- Cholera
- Waterborne Disease
- Typhoid Fever
- Shigellosis
- Tuberculosis
- Lyptospirosis
- Urinary Infections
16Water Contamination by Contact
17Our History
- Cholera epidemics in San Antonio in the 1800s
- 1869 Sister Madeline Cholett and St. Pierre
Cinquin opened a hospital called the Santa Rosa
Hospital due to a Cholera epidemic
18Cholera
- Faintness feeling
- Stomach Flutters
- Prodigious attack of diarrhea
- Diarrhea becomes odorless white fluids after
two hours - Dehydration
- Spasms
- Skin begins to hang
19Causes of Cholera
Bacteria Vibrio Chlorae fed by
- Sewage Discharges
- Fertilizer Run-off
20Yellow Fever
- Black Vomit from the blood of gastric
hemorrhages. - Backache
- Headache
- Sore Limbs
- After 3 days Shaking and Fever
- Nose bleed and gums
- Delirious
- Survivors are immune for life
21Typhoid Fever
Salmonella Typhi Bacteria
22WE TODAY CAN PREVENT WATER BORNE DESEASES BY
FOLLOWING STRICT WATER TREATMENT PROTICALS
23Water PurificationTreatment Plants
24If all the nations in the world would process
water by using strict water quality standards,
water borne diseases would no longer plague
mankind but that day is yet to come.
