2The Diploma
- You can do a Diploma in Years 10 and 11 and post
16 - By 2011 there will be 17 subjects available
- It is normally a two-year course
- You can study it at three levels

5A Diploma is different because
- It is a portfolio of qualifications and
achievements (there are lots of different bits to
it!) - It is about a broad vocational area, e.g.
Hospitality, IT or Creative and Media - You might spend time at another school, college
or work place
6A Diploma is different because
- You can still study GCSEs or A Levels or
vocational qualifications alongside the Diploma - It includes practical activities, projects,
problem solving and tasks related to work - Work experience is compulsory
7After a Diploma you could...
- apply for a course such as a Diploma at the next
level, A Levels or a vocational qualification
such as an NVQ - apply for an Apprenticeship
- apply for a job with training
- apply for Higher Education after doing an
Advanced Diploma
8How you might spend your time
In Year 10 and 11 you will typically spend two
days on Diploma study, and the rest on GCSE and
compulsory subjects like maths, English and
science
- In Year 12 and above, you will spend most of your
time focusing on the Diploma and the additional
and specialist learning (ASL) you chose

9Diploma levels
THE FOUNDATION DIPLOMA is equivalent to5 GCSEs
at grades D to G THE HIGHER DIPLOMA is
equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A to C THE
ADVANCED DIPLOMA is equivalent to 3.5 A levels
10Diploma levels
- Principal Learning the main specialist content
of the Diploma subject - Extended Project - creating something to show
what has been learnt - Functional Skills - the English, maths and ICT
you need for everyday life - Additional and Specialist Learning - options,
e.g. vocational qualifications, A Levels, short
courses linked to a hobby - Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
- Work Experience minimum of 10 days
