Title: World Relief in Darfur
1 2In the bleak desert landscape of Darfur, donkeys
are an essential mode of transport and carry
loads such as firewood. Sick donkeys can be a
huge setback for families in Darfur. World
Relief and partners help keep the animals healthy
through de-worming activities

treats a leg infection. In West Darfur, World
Relief supports a vital clinic network that
serves thousands of vulnerable people. Without
our support, the people of Um Tagouk would have
to travel more than 25 miles, by donkey or on
foot, each way to receive medical care.
4Infants and young children are especially
vulnerable in this volatile region, where the
ongoing conflict has claimed up to 300,000 lives
and uprooted many families. World Relief focuses
on young children and their mothers.
5At supplementary feeding centers, our trained
workers identify the children most at risk.
Malnourished children receive a nutritious blend
of corn soy, sugar, vitamins, salt and oil to
help them gain weight. Their growth is monitored
until they are out of danger.
6World Relief works with nomadic peoples in West
Darfur mothers and children like this woman and
her child. Since the conflict began, an
estimated 2 million people have been driven from
their homes and villages.
7World Reliefs nutrition monitors go into
communities and find the most at-risk children
who are then referred to the feeding centers.
World Relief also provides seeds, tools and
donkey ploughs so that families can grow their
own food.
8By drilling wells and installing community pumps,
World Relief and partners have provided thousands
of displaced villagers with reliable access to
clean drinking water. Women and girls no longer
have to leave the community in search of water.
In the past, women and girls have been attacked
and raped while fetching water at rivers and
dirty watering holes.
9Mothers register their children for health and
nutritional programs in West Darfur. World
Relief aims to empower the local people.
Gradually, mothers are learning how they can
protect their children from malnutrition and
disease.
10Young mothers on the World Relief Nutrition staff
mix the corn-soy blend with salt and oil that
will be distributed to mothers with malnourished
children. A revolutionary food known as Plumpy
nut, a high protein, peanut butter-type blend is
used to help severely undernourished children
gain weight.
11In Um Tagouk, World Relief serves 20,000
vulnerable people through the local health clinic
and feeding centers. Many walk or ride donkeys
for miles to reach our programs. We are
certainly Gods hands in Darfur, says World
Reliefs Warren Wright. There are no churches
in this area, so it is extremely important that
we have a presence and that Gods love is in
Darfur.
