Learning outcomes
  • LO2 Learner is able to demonstrate knowledge and
    understanding of processes and spatial patterns
    dealing with interactions between humans and the
    environment in space and time.
  • LO3 Learner is able to apply geographical skills
    and knowledge to environmental issues and
    challenges, recognise values and attitudes, and
    demonstrate the ability to recommend solutions
    and strategies

Background
  • Various land disputes are going on between
    indigenous communities next to National Parks.
  • Most of the communities have been forcefully
    removed from their traditional land and
    resettled.
  • They have been excluded from decision making
    processes and not compensated

Project Tasks
  • Learners work in groups and investigate the land
    conflict issue from 4 perspectives (politician,
    environmentalist, community member, economist)
  • Learners must use thinking tools to find reasons
    for conflict and rank them
  • Learners must look for solutions and design a
    brochure reflecting all viewpoints and come up
    with recommendations for co-existence (or not)
  • Class must write a letter to the newspaper on
    this issue

  • Collaborative rubric self assessment
  • Project evaluation rubric individual and group
    efforts are recognised as well as the quality of
    the final products

Timeframes
  • Introduction ( 1period)
  • Introductory exercise of 20 minutes linking prior
    knowledge will kickstart the project
  • Then class will be divided into groups and
    individual roles be chosen within groups
  • Investigation worksheets are handed out and
    gathering phase explained
  • Gathering phase (3 periods)
  • Processing phase (2 periods thinking tools)
  • Production phase (2 periods)
