- Services that provide advice and resources to
individuals and institutions on how to develop
strategy, change policy, innovate and improve
practices, benefit from new technologies
Etc.
6Development programmes
- Several hundred development projects that fund
activities in institutions to support and
encourage innovation - Organised into programme themes that are planned
holistically - e-Learning programme

- Information Environment programme
- Users and Innovation programme
- Leading to guides to good practice, exemplars,
shared knowledge and experience, developing and
supporting networks
7e-Learning Programme 2008-2012
- The aim of the JISC e-learning programme is to
enable UK further and higher education to create
a better learning environment for all learners,
wherever and however they study, in order to
realise the vision

stakeholders use technology to enhance the
overall educational experience by improving
flexibility and creativity and by encouraging
comprehensive and diverse personal, high quality

10Outputs of programmes In their own words
...And because they technologies save me time,
I can spend more time doing the research and
getting everything ready, because I know when I
put the whole thing together, it will come
together quite smoothly. Gary, 4th Year
Medical Student In their own words report,
JISC
They learners have an expectation of being
able to access up-to-date and relevant
information and resources and see this as vital.
They dont see technology as anything
specialjust another tool to support their
learning. LXP Student Experiences of
Technologies Final report (Conole et al., 2006)

11Stories from the Regional Pilots
- 21 projects looking at the use of technology to
support lifelong learning in a regional context - Including the effective use of e-portfolios to
support widening participation and progression - And use of social networking tools for
educational purposes
12HE in FE strand
- Projects to implement and pilot e-learning
technologies within the HE in FE context - Focus was on projects that aim to address an
issue faced by piloting an appropriate, existing
technology with students in order to enhance the
learners experience - Focus on evaluating the experience of those
involved, including learners, practitioners and
employers - March 2007 March 2009
- 9 projects funded
13HE in FE strand
- These projects are supporting the HEFCE
e-Learning Strategy, HEFCW strategic aims and the
DfES e-Strategy. - Supporting widening participation through the
- Facilitation of progression
- Provision and support of work-based learning
- Flexible delivery
- Personalised learning experiences
14Deliverables
- Implementations of e-learning technologies to
support learners on HE courses delivered in
colleges - Pedagogic and technical models
- Reports or case studies analysing the areas where
the project has been more or less successful,
highlighting the implications and challenges for
the sector - Evaluation reports - of the learners experience,
including case studies, learner diaries,
reflective logs
15Projects
- E-portfolio / PDP related
- Bradford College ELGG to support work-based
learners - Gateshead College e-portfolios to support
work-based learners - Hull College ELGG to support work-based learners
- Leicester College exploring use of pocket PCs
by teaching assistants to help them reflect and
collect evidence - e-Assessment
- Derby College personalising assessment for WBL
- University of Wales College, Cardiff exploring
the role of e-assessment across partner colleges
16Projects
- Mobile technologies and social software
- Sheffield College use of blogs and
- wikis to teach e-communication
- University of Glamorgan and Kingston
- College use of social software and
- mobile technologies to support learners
- in the workplace
17Hull College
- Using ELGG to support work-based learners
- Developing a 3-way conversation with the
learners, employers and tutor - Across a range of Foundation Degrees, one PGCE
and a BSc. - Early findings
- Business students were less IT literate, but they
understood the value of the software and were
quicker to make use of it - Computing and IT students had a wider experience
of software but were slower to see the academic
benefit - Part-time students have different levels of
engagement with their employer - Students doing group work whilst not on campus
enjoyed having all materials in one place - Tutors like the reduction in paperwork regarding
the assessment of reflection and PDP online - Reflection is hard tutors need support in
prompting and eliciting reflection from their
learners
18Next steps
