- Long-term preservation at the KB
- Problem Rapid deterioration or obsolescence
- LTP management module
- Identification of digital objects that are
endangered because of technological
deterioration - Registration of technical metadata --gt Which
software and hardware is necessary to view the
digital item in the future? - Implementation of activities that are
associated with technical preservation - All this is done by means of Preservation Layer
Models (PLMs) and the use of View paths
13Legal Deposit of Digital Materials
Erik Oltmans
A Preservation Layer Model contains 4 abstraction
levels
Autonomous Digital Item
- The Data format identifies the structure and
meaning of a bit-stream, like a .PDF file
- The structure and meaning of the bit-stream are
defined within the application logic of a
specific Viewer Application. Used for creating,
modifying, and presenting the information in the
specified format
- The Operating System contains the functionalities
that all viewer applications need like access to
a printer or scanner, and fundamental
requirements like file structure
- The Reference Platform specifies how the bits and
bytes are transformed to a physical
representation like for example on a screen
Requested Information Object

- Possible strategies
- Copying to fresh medium and
- Migration (conversion) to new format or
- Emulation of rendering tool or
- Combination of both UVC (Universal Virtual
Computer) - Repeated actions, permanent RD
16Legal Deposit of Digital Materials
Erik Oltmans
- Plans for the future
- Generic procedure for loading (configurable post
office) - Security
- More publishers, more content
- Integration with LTP modules

Erik Oltmans
- Conclusions
- KB made the first steps to a new library process
design - KBs e-Depot is fully operational, but for LTP
it will need further research and development - International co-operation and exchange of
information is necessary
