BEGINNING TO BUILD A NEW LIFE TOGETHER The goal
of this event is to assist in the merged parishes
to come together in a non-threatening environment
in order to reflect and remember what has passed
and to begin to celebrate what lies ahead in a
new faith community.

Teresa and Saint Maria Goretti with the seat of
the parish being Saint Teresa. However, it is
also my intention to include Saint Maria Goretti
as an additional worship site for the newly

What is the function of the home (seat) of the
new parish?
  • The pastor, the administration, the parish
    office, the staff, the coordination of
    ministries, and the sacramental and business
    records are located at the home (seat) of the
    parish. It is recommended that events that affect
    the life of the new parish such as the Sacraments
    of Initiation be celebrated in the home (seat) of
    the parish including the entrance of RCIA
    candidates on Holy Saturday and the celebration
    of First Eucharist and Confirmation. However the
    pastor may determine that there are sufficient
    pastoral reasons to allow baptisms,
    reconciliation, weddings, and funerals at a
    parish worship site(s).

Will all worship sites function the same way?
  • No, there are various options for how a worship
    site(s) might function.
  • This would vary according to the local needs.
    For example, it could be
  • any of the following as long as there is someone
    to oversee the facility
  • while it is open
  • 1) a church kept open for daily mass or daily
    mass on a rotation schedule with the parish
    church or other worship site(s)
  • 2) a church where the sacraments of Baptism,
    First Eucharist, Reconciliation may be celebrated
  • 3) a church kept open on a limited basis for
    weekend liturgy, some daily masses and
    Eucharistic adoration
  • 4) a church where services are limited to
    weddings, funerals and special liturgies and
    devotions
  • 5) a church used for some worship services (e.g.
    school) and some outreach ministry
  • 6) a church that is used only seasonally
  • 7) a church that combines some of the options
    above

  • Their role is to prepare all that is needed to
    establish the new parish so it can begin to
    function canonically and civilly under its new
    name, with a new pastor and staff and the newly
    merged parish community. They also plan for the
    first year of operation of the new parish.

  • The purpose of the meeting was to get a
    commitment to serve one parish from both
    ministers and lectors, stressing the importance
    of serving at both churches

Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha
The daughter of a Mohawk warrior and a Catholic
Algonquin woman, was born in the Mohawk fortress
of Ossernenon near present-day Auriesville, New
York. When she was four, smallpox swept through
Ossernenon, and Tekakwitha was left with
unsightly scars on her face and poor eyesight.
In 1666, Alexandre de Prouville burned down
Ossernenon. Kateri's clan then settled on the
north side of the Mohawk River, near what is now
Fonda, New York. While living here, at the age of
20, Tekakwitha was baptized on Easter Sunday,
April 18, 1676 by Father Jacques de Lamberville,
a Jesuit. At her baptism, she took the name
"Kateri," a Mohawk pronunciation of the French
name "Catherine". Tekakwitha literally means "she
moves things."
Unable to understand her zeal, members of the
tribe often chastised her, which she took as a
testament to her faith. Because she was
persecuted by her Native American kin, which even
resulted in threats on her life, she fled to an
established community of Native American
Christians located in Kahnawake, Quebec, where
she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penance,
and care for the sick and aged. In 1679, she took
a vow of chastity, as in the Catholic expression
of Consecrated virginity. A year later, Kateri
died at the age of 24, with her last words being
"Jesus, I love You!" Kateri exercised physical
mortification as a route to sanctity.

Father Damien of Molokai
Joseph De Veuster, the future Father Damien, was
born at Tremelo in Belgium, January 3rd, 1840.
In 1863, his brother who was to leave for the
mission in the Hawaiian Islands, became ill.
Since preparations for the voyage had already
been made, Damien obtained permission from the
Superior General, to take his brother's place. He
arrived in Honolulu on March 19th, 1864, where he
was ordained to the priesthood the following May
21st. He immediately devoted himself, body and
soul, to the difficult service of a "country
missionary" on the island of Hawaii, the largest
in the Hawaiian group.
At that time, the Hawaiian Government decided on
a very harsh measure aimed at stopping the spread
of "leprosy", the deportation to the neighboring
island of Molokai, of all those infected by what
was thought to be an incurable disease. The
entire mission was concerned about the abandoned
"lepers" and the Bishop, Louis Maigret ss.cc.,
spoke to the priests about the problem. He did
not want to send anyone "in the name of
obedience", because he knew that such an order
meant certain death. Four Brothers volunteered,
they would take turns visiting and assisting the
"lepers" in their distress. Damien was the first
to leave on May 10th, 1873. At his own request
and that of the lepers, he remained definitively
on Molokai.
