6 I, Martin Luther King, Jr. am writing in
response to your letter. First off, I want to
commend you all on the current state of equality
in your country. But truly I want to focus on the
aspect of community capital. In the prime of my
career, I made major advancements in the field of
Civil Rights. Luckily, my work continued after my
life was taken early. The reason I started on my
mission for justice was because I grew up during
the oppressive time of Jim Crow laws. Also, the
environment of living with two devout preachers
for African American rights, my father and
grandfather, this made it an innate
characteristic for me to speak out about my
opinions. My children were a main vantage point
to work so relentlessly for equality because I
wanted them to be judged by the content of their
character, rather than the color of their skin.
7- Through the close-knit communities of church
followers in my church, this made it easy to
disseminate the message to resist, and no longer
accept the oppression we were under. I felt this
message of reformation was the job God was
calling me to carry out. Once we had the churchs
support, the whole of the Afro-community was
taken by storm and united by the common enemy of
injustice. In this community there were smaller
groups that made the mission more personalized
and allowed for mutual support and aid. As your
current political science thinker Robert Putnam
said in accord with the goals of community
capital it is such an influential thing to have
in society because it changes ones I to We,
enhancing the participants taste for
collective benefits. For the future, I wish for
you to look onward and see the day that is so
close to your reach. The day when not only your
laws will reflect the pure equality of all races,
but your mind set, media, and perception of
everyone will be unaffected by the color of their
skin, gender, or any definitive qualities. -
Yours Truly, MLK, Jr.
