    build security
  • Depending on what kind of perception a state
    holds, it also tends to act in accordance with
    that conception
  • Conceptions of security are hard to change and
    often entrenched in deep-seated identity and long
    established norms
  • History and past experiences function as major
    structural constraints to change

    directed toward a states internalization of the
    constitutive beliefs and practices
    institutionalized in its international
    environment
  • Socialization is a process, nor an outcome
  • Internalization means the adoption of social
    beliefs and practices into the actors own
    repertoire of behaviour
  • Social actors are corporate actors, not
    individuals

    particular directions by encouraging specific
    beliefs and attitudes and provide states and
    their leaders guidelines about how they are
    suppose to behave in the international system

    closely related to socialization

    misleading anthropomorphism

  • Persuasion Political internalization takes the
    form of pressure where domestic actors
    successfully lobby for norm compliance
  • Institutionalization The defining feature of
    state socialization. an institution is a practice
    which one expects to continue into the future and
    whose reproduction over time does not require
    active intervention
