Title: Emotional Intelligence and Leadership: A Vision of Excellence
1Emotional Intelligence and Leadership A Vision
of Excellence
2Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, and Excellence
- EI is intricately related to Leadership
- Leadership and Vision are intricately related
- Leadership Brings our best in self and others
- EI provides a foundation and framework for
Leadership and Personal Excellence - Personal Excellence is Self-Defined and
Self-Directed
3Accountability Now
- Live and work in a time where Accountability is
job one - Mostly an externally determined measure or
standard - In education Tested Performance
- In business ROI, Targets, Quotas, Financial
Goals - Tends to be externally derived and demanded
4Excellence and Vision Building Quality From
Within
- In our EI Model, Personal Excellence is more of a
personal standard of actions and performance - Self-Defined and Self-Directed
- Experiential System (Emotional Mind) seems to be
the lead system - Excellence builds on positive contributions of EI
and the Emotional Mind - Personal commitment to become a better and wiser
person to model personal excellence
5Accountability A Personal Perspective
- For sure, external measures and extrinsic
motivators are important - Often, externally-derived standards are adopted
and imposed - We need to accept and deliver accountability
- Often, perceived as artificial and in tested
performance - External standards are cognitive system standards
6Accountability A Personal Perspective
- On personal level, we know that personal
standards are often more important - In other words, intrinsic motivation (building
quality from within) trumps extrinsic motivation - Organizations need motivated and achievement
driven people to succeed
7Accountability A Personal Perspective
- Leadership needs to bring out the best in people
- Need to bridge external factors and internal
measures of excellence - Learned ability of EI helps leaders build a
bridge of excellence with contributions of
emotional system - When emotional intelligence is missing, it is
painfully obvious and cause for real concern
8Leadership and Personal Excellence
- A Vision of excellence and ones best self is key
- Self awareness (honest and accurate) is essential
for leaders and persons who want to grow - Our emerging model of personal excellence is
grounded in EI research and the development of
the whole person - Our model is not the model and it may not even
be true.
9Personal Excellence
- Emotional Learning System is beginning point for
thinking about and developing EI and personal
excellence - ELS STEPS - EXPLORE, IDENTIFY, UNDERSTAND, LEARN,
APPLY/MODEL - Personal Excellence is by-product of a confluence
of systems, principles, and skills - Join me on a personal journey to personal
excellence
10Two Truths in Learning
- I Value of Seeing the big picture first at
beginning not at the end - In this case, the big picture is a vision of
self at our very best - learning, developing, and
modeling emotional intelligence - II Starting with the end in mind
- In this case, the end in mind is Personal
Excellence
