2IDEA Definition of Emotional Disturbance
- 1. A condition exhibiting one or more of the
following characteristics over a long period of
time and to a marked degree, which adversely
affects educational performance - a) an inability to learn which cannot be
explained by intellectual, sensory or health
factors - b) an inability to build or maintain satisfactory
relationships with peers and teachers - c) inappropriate types of behavior or feelings
under normal circumstances - d) a general pervasive mood of unhappiness or
depression or - e) a tendency to develop physical symptoms or
fears associated with personal or school
problems. - 2. The term includes children who are
schizophrenic or autistic. The term does not
include children who are socially maladjusted,
unless it is determined that they are seriously
emotionally disturbed.
3Externalizing Behaviors
The most common behavior pattern and of children
with emotional behavioral disorders consist of
antisocial or externalizing behaviors such as
- Temper tantrums
- Lying
- Destroying property
- Not complying with directions
- They are excluded from peer-controlled activities
- They do not respond to teacher corrections
- They do not complete assignments
- getting out of their seats
- Yelling, talking out, cursing
- Disturbing their peers
- Hitting, fighting or arguing excessively
- Ignoring the teacher
- Complaining
- Stealing

- They usually do not have the social skills needed
to make new friends and have fun - They often retreat into daydreams and fantasies
- Some are fearful without reason
- They frequently complain of being sick or hurt
7STEPS FOR ADAPTING INSTRUCTION
- Step 1 select subject are
- Step 2 select topic to be taught
- Step 3 briefly identify the goals for most
learners - Step 4 briefly identify the instructional plan
for most learners - Step 5 identify the learners who will need
adaptations - Step 6 based on individual learner, choose
appropriate mix of adaptations beginning with
least restrictive - Step 7 evaluate effectiveness of adaptations.
Monitor and adjust while teaching

young people in the U.S. has a serious emotional
disturbance. Sadly, two-thirds of these young
people are not getting the help they need.
