THE HULA--
  • the hula was a very misunderstood tradition of
    the Hawaiian people
  • a dance/ritual to express their praise worship
    to their gods
  • the foreigners saw it as a savage, sinful act of
    foolishness

3
Some information
  • The Hawaiians dance by connecting with their
    other surroundings.
  • Whatever the song explains, the dancers have to
move as the objects or emtions move.

4
ART OR EXPRESSION??
  • Along with chanting, the Hula was a way to shout
to the world the way the Hawaiian people were
feeling or if they want to get a point across
  • Hula was called an art due to the movements of
the body which act out the motions of nature,
    feeling, or emotion.

Kahiko Auana
(Ancient style) (Modern style)
  • Kahiko (Ancient Style)- the Kahiko was the
traditional way the hula was danced before the
foreigners came. This style was more on the
rougher side of the Hula. This style was used
to worship their gods, express any emotions
through dance song, to get straight to the
    point.
  • Auana (Modern Style)- the Auana was used after
the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This is
the graceful, gentle side of hula which we all
love. This style was use to be taught to all who
wanted to learn. The Auana style is the modern
    way of dancing the Hula.

  • There are two types of hula
  • Kahiko
  • Auana
  • Kahiko is a type of dance that was dance to
    worship the Hawaiian gods.
  • Auana was distributed after the missionaries came
to Hawaii, and because the women werent as
powerful as they were back then, they thought
that the Kahiko shouldnt be danced anymore.
  • After all this happened, King Kalakaua developed
his own group of hula dancers to bring back the
    ancient Hawaiian culture.

The Hula Today
  • Today, hula is still a important legacy of the
    Hawaiian culture.
  • Sometimes hula is just an entertainment, and is
    performed in festivals and parties.
  • There are also teaching facilities, and hula
competitions such as the Merrie Monarch Keiki
Hula which contain the Kahiko, and Auana style
    dances.
