portal of the - international research project The Rise of Modern
Constitutionalism. - Aim of the project is to make all constitutional
documents from - 1776 until 1849 available in its original and in

- The project is lead by Prof. Horst Dippel and his
team from the - University of Kassel, Germany. The online
database was developed at - the Göttingen Digitization Centre, Germany.
- 50 scholars worldwide as well as the finest
research institutions in - constitutional history contribute to the project.
- Results of the project are published in a book
edition at K. G. Saur Verlag Constitutions of
the World from the late 18th Century to the
Middle of the 19th Century Sources on the Rise
of Modern Constitutionalism. 2005-2009, 24
volumes in several partsISBN 978-3-598-35680-3 - The volumes of the book edition are available
online once they are published.
4Content of the database
- The database contains
- Constitutions
- Amendments
- Drafts of Constitutions
- Declarations of Rights
- from 51 countries in all the then used languages.
- The documents are available as digital facsimile
copies and in edited and annotated versions
original

5Size of the database
- The project is still ongoing, the database is
growing continuously. - Currently (July 2009) the database contains
approx. 1,350 digitized facsimile texts and
approx. 820 edited constitutions documents. - Estimated are approx. 1,500 constitutional
documents.
6Browse and search options
- The database offers two ways to access the
constitutional documents - Browse lists for countries, dates and titles to
access all documents from a certain country,
sub-national unit (state or region), by year of
adoption or draft, or through a certain title. - Search options
- Metadata search through the descriptive data of
all documents such as title, country, type etc. - Full text search through all edited
constitutional documents - Index search through all edited constitutional
documents
7Index search
- Each paragraph of each edition text has been
indexed using standardized index terms in 16
different languages. - This means that each document, irrespective its
language, can be accessed using a standardized
term in any of the languages. - The results list shows the relevant paragraphs
for the index term in the constitutional
document. Paragraphs from different constitutions
can thus be easily compared

Select the country from the box on top of the
page and see all documents relating to this
country

Access to the digital facsimile and edition texts
as well as links to the metadata of both
versions. It is also shown if multiple language
versions are available.

The edition text is linked with the digital
facsimiles. The document TOC allows easy access
to the different chapters.
13Edition text of the constitution
The editors notes can be found at the bottom of
each document. Footnotes in the text link to them.
14Edition text of the constitution
The descriptive metadata gives a full
bibliographic citation of the document including
its persistent URL
