5Computer basics
- Hardware
- The electric, electronic, and mechanical devices
used for processing data. - Peripheral device
- The equipment that is outside of or in addition
to a computer and that is used with the computer. - Software
- The instructions and associated data, stored in
electronic format, that direct the computer to
accomplish a task.
Defining computers
6(1) Basic computer function
- A computer accepts input.
- Input is whatever you put into a computer system.
Defining computers
7(2) Basic computer function
- A computer processes data.
- The CPU or Central Processing unit is the most
important piece of hardware. It is the brains of
the computer.
Defining computers
8(3) Basic computer function
- A computer stores data.
- Data can be stored temporarily in memory called
RAM (random access memory). - Data can be stored permanently on storage medium.
Defining computers
9(4) Basic computer function
- A computer produces output.
- Output is the result produced by a computer.
- Monitors and printers display output.
