Time for a quiz

4
Fire Pump Room
  • This piece of equipment controls the flow of
water to the sprinkler system inside the
    building.
  • If this piece of equipment failsyou guessed it ?

5
Dry fire pipe system
  • This piece of equipment delivers water to each
floor from the outside of the building. The Fire
Department connects its hoses at the Dry Pipe
    Stand.
  • This pipe runs to every floor in the building.

6
Booster pump
  • This piece of equipment propels domestic water to
the top of a high rise building, allowing
pressure to be consistent to the top floor of any
    high rise.
  • If this piece of equipment goes down, there will
be no water for showers, toilets, etc., above the
    5th floor!

7
Backflow preventer
  • This piece of Equipment prevents domestic water
from flowing back into the citys water system.
  • If this piece of equipment fails the citys water
    system can be contaminated.

8
Rooftop AC handler
  • This piece of equipment controls the flow of air
    conditioning throughout the building.
  • If this piece of equipment failshotness!

9
VCT Tile
  • This piece of equipment is a relatively
inexpensive manufactured tile that we use when we
replace our flooring in the residence halls.
Extremely easy to clean and it is very durable.
  • Why is important to know different types of
    flooring?

10
Flush Valve
  • This piece of equipment controls the ability to
    flush a toilet.
  • There are many different kinds including those
with an automatic sensor to control flushing.
  • If this piece of equipment failsbonus points for
anybody who can tell us how to shut this off!

11
Chilled Water Pump
  • This piece of equipment controls the flow of cold
water from our physical plant division to our
buildings providing ac to the building. It
acts very similar to the booster pump previously
    seen.
  • If this piece of equipment failsyes, hotness
again, and in the SEAHO Region, that often means
    serious condensation and mildew issues!

12
Asbestos Hazard
  • This sign provides mass panic on move in day!
  • But it is lawfully mandated sign when asbestos is
    present.
  • Who can tell us what asbestos is, what it is used
for and where you can find it?

13
Facility knowledge is important
  • It is vital that you understand how the
mechanical and non-mechanical parts of your
    building(s) work
  • Parents/Students come to you
  • Impact on and communicating with students
  • The Hierarchy

14
Motivational Theory
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
  • Human Needs
  • Two Major groups
  • Basic Needs
  • Meta Needs

15
Facilities at UF
  • Area Project meetings
  • Meet once a month in both the areas and as a
    side of campus
  • Meetings designed to facilitate communication
    about all area issues
  • All area supervisors (Residence Life,
Maintenance, Custodial) are in attendance for
    the area meetings
  • Maintenance superintendants and building
    construction inspectors also attend
  • Walk-throughs
  • Done on a monthly/bi-monthly basis
  • Individual supervisors pick a time and location
  • At times more walk-throughs happen because
situations in the areas dictate it

16
Facilities at UF
  • Communication plan building relationships
  • The Department gives us specific communication
expectations both to those in our area and those
that have investment in our facilities
  • Each area Residence Life professional is expected
to build relationships with their maintenance and
    custodial supervisors
  • Area Maintenance and Custodial Supervisor know to
seek out the Res Life Professional when a major
piece of equipment fails or an issue arises that
    will impact our residents.
  • In Students Eyes
  • Get the students involved
  • Done every August right after opening
  • Items needing attention either get fixed right
away or are put into next years budget request

Facilities at UF
  • Budget preparation
  • Everyone has a list that is kept on an annual
    basis
  • Special projects budget process
  • Special projects budget
  • Anything under 100K is considered a special
    project
  • Most range in cost from 5K to 50K
  • Residence Life, Maintenance, Custodial staff
    all make their wish lists
  • Each side of campus is given an allotment of
    money
  • For 4 months the staff working on the special
project budgets prioritize everything until each
    area meets their fiscal goal

20
How to Become Involved on Your Campus
  • Brainstorming Ideas

21
How to Become Involved on Your Campus
  • Talk to your supervisor
  • Dont wait for someone to askjump right in!
  • Sometimes your supervisor is not always the
person to make this kind of request happen (but
always let them know youre asking! ?)
  • Learn the structure of your department and its
    connection to facilities care
  • Does your department take care of its own
facilities or does someone else on campus?
  • Who makes decisions about facility work?
  • Is there a master plan?
  • Does your department/university practice
    preventative maintenance?

22
How to Become Involved on Your Campus
  • Make a list of facilities issues that are
    relevant to your job
  • What issues do I have the most?
  • Where are the pieces of equipment in the
aforementioned slides located in my building(s)?
  • Do I work with the maintenance/custodial staff to
help them solve issues that are caused by
    residents?
  • Is there a way to prevent the problem issues from
    a residence life side?

23
How to Become Involved on Your Campus
  • Never be afraid to get your hands dirty
  • Have lunch with your maintenance and custodial
supervisorsthey have more knowledge and years of
experience than you dojust because housing
doesnt oversee your facilities does not mean you
cannot have a conversation with those employees
as they come and go from your buildings
  • Observe everything

24
Conclusion
  • Facility knowledge is a key ingredient to your
success as a Res Life professional because
  • General understanding of how your facility
    operates
  • Better communication with students and parents
  • Understanding your facility helps you connect
students needs with their success in the
    academic environment
  • If your desire is to become a Director of Housing
somewhere, some day, you must master facilities
    knowledge!
  • Business practices at UF
  • While our model is not correct for every
    department, overall involvement by all
stakeholders is the key to success.
  • How you can become an expert
  • Jump right in!
  • Show that you care and are interested in
    learning!
