6
What is a wiki?
  • A wiki is an open content website
  • Anyone can add and edit pages
  • A wiki serves two communities
  • Reference users
  • Contributors

7
How OpenGuides came about
  • A few London Perl Mongers were looking for an
    existing community site for London
  • They wanted a place to keep notes on venues and
    events.
  • They didn't find one
  • So they just did it
  • The site was called Grubstreet

8
How OpenGuides came about
  • The original software we were using was a single
    monolithic script
  • Grubstreet lasted a year before we decided to
    rewrite the software
  • The rewrite took a further 6 months
  • A new modular approach with CGIWiki
  • OpenGuides being a geographic application of
    CGIWiki

What has all this got to do with SVG?
  • We want to be able to draw maps
  • We want to be able to show where all the places
actually are, relative to each other.
  • SVG provides a graphical XML
  • Which is what we were looking for

13
We have the data
  • Pages already have X / Y coordinates
  • Ordnance Survey grid reference
  • Pages already have categorisation, e.g.
  • Pubs
  • Restaurants
  • Tube Stations
  • Major attractions
  • etc.

14
Let's draw some icons
15
Drawing a map
  • These can be placed in a rectangle
  • Positioned according to their X and Y
  • Possibly with an existing map as backdrop
  • A clickable link on each icon
