HOW DO YOU THINK THE CAT FEELS ?
RFU Referee Education
3
What are the 3 main Legal Tackles?
NORMAL TACKLE
DOMINANT TACKLE
  • SURRENDER TACKLE

4
  • Normal Tackle

Player in possession is held by opposing players
and the ball or ball carrying arm touches the
ground When a player is on the ground and a
opposing player places a hand on the grounded
player Succumb to the tackle. This means he makes
it evident to the referee that he is not going to
continue to make progress and therefore allow
himself to be tackled
Upright tackle is when a player is held by
opposing players in such a manner that he can
make no further progress and cannot off load the
ball
5
  • DOMINANT TACKLE

A Dominant tackle is when the defender takes
control and drives the ball carrier backwards in
one movement.
6
SURRENDER TACKLE
It is when someone in possession allows him /
herself to be tackled by diving to the ground or
losing their legs.
7
  • There are approximately 400 of them in Rugby
    League what are they ?

8
It is imperative that this area is monitored and
controlled!
9
9 SINS of the play the ball
  • Flopping/pushing the tackled player back down.
  • Straddling of the tackled player as they attempt
    to regain their feet
  • The pulling of the tackled players leg as he is
    rising to play the ball
  • Making contact on the ball with the hand causing
the play the ball to be delayed.
  • Placing a hand on the head\shoulder of the player
    playing the ball.
  • Deliberately bumping\running into the player at
    the play the ball.
  • Players lying behind the play the ball.
  • Players leaving their head in the tackle as they
    stand up.
  • Tackler taking the space of the man attempting to
stand up to play the ball.

10
On all three tackles what can the tackler do ?
11
Surrender tackle
The defender is allowed to work the player on the
ground and the tackler is therefore allowed more
time to compensate for the player with the ball
attempting to gain an unfair advantage by
standing up before the tackler.
12
Dominant Tackle
  • The Tackler is Rewarded for good technique and
allowed to work the player on the floor.

13
Normal Tackle
  • When the tackle is complete he must release,
stand up or rollaway from the tackle immediately.

14
And in all cases
  • What MUST the ball carrier do ?
