Title: SNAP

SNAP
  • Sweden (Hälsingland)
  • North Pennines (United Kingdom)
  • And Ploërmel (Coeur de Bretagne)

2
SNAP
  • The SNAP project aims to achieve a mutual
understanding by young musicians of the
traditional music repertoire from each of the
three partner regions, both within a live
    performance context and as professionally
recorded (CD and DVD) for posterity.

SNAP is what people in England say when they
have the same idea at the same time.
3
Finding Partners to share the Idea
  • We in the North Pennines region of the UK have a
    history of successful LEADER transnational
projects, especially in terms of music.

4
CSERW
  • In the Common Sounds of European Rural World
project (2000-2001), musicians from the North
Pennines played Northumbrian music in a small
Italian mountain village, and musicians from the
Molise region of Italy played their bagpipes in
    the North Pennines

5
CSERW
  • The CSERW project was successful on its own
musical terms, within the context of the bagpipe
tradition, and the partners also produced a joint
website and tourism brochures in each partners
    language.

6
CSERW
  • Neither partner, however, envisaged actually
learning the other partners music the project
involved separate performance playing at an
audience, rather than playing with the other
    partner.
  • The bagpipes of each region are constructed in
different keys, and so cannot be played
    together.
  • We loved the project, and we loved each others
music, but we could not think how to carry the
    project further.

7
Fast Forward --gtSNAP03
  • We in the North Pennines were delighted to be
contacted in the summer of 2003 by a Swedish
musical group from Hälsingland, who had seen
something of our transnational experiences, and
who wanted to explore the idea of a transnational
    project involving young musicians.

8
SNAP03 Ignition!
  • The arrival, in the small village of Allendale,
Northumberland, of a coach-load of young Swedish
musicians, and their performance in a favourite
local pub, following a showcase set by young
musicians from the northeast region of the UK,
    was electrifying!
  • We realised we could make exciting music
    together!

Suddenly Stunning SNAP04
  • Working together and planning throughout 2004, in
a further series of explorations, we put together
a set of shared workshops in each others regions
during June and August, which culminated in a
joint concert in Järvsö, Hälsingland, and the
recording of The First Gathering, the SNAP04
    CD.
  • These workshops also resulted in a documentary
VideoDisc CD SNAP04, in which young musician
paricipants described their own reactions to the
    experience

    others tunes.

Simply Stunning SNAP04 CD
  • The lovely and stunning SNAP04 CD was launched
in the North Pennines and is now available to
    purchase for only 25.

11
Whither SNAP05?
  • Success in the formal exploratory project of
SNAP04 meant a realistic chance of developing a
    larger project for 2005/2006.
  • Meanwhile, prompted by additional interest from
    other potential European partners, further
explorations in France during September 2004
identified a best-fit partner from Coeur de
    Bretagne.

12
Coordination SNAP05
  • At a formal coordinators meeting in the North
Pennines over the Easter weekend, the final
crucial components of the SNAP05 project locked
    into place
  • Most importantly, musical interactions between
the musical leaders from each region meant that
the formal SNAP05 project could move forward
    with a shared musical mission

13
SNAP05 North Pennines
  • During the first week of June, after the
wonderful Hexham Gathering, perhaps the largest
annual collection of young traditional musicians
in one place in the UK, the first workshop
    session of SNAP05 commenced.
  • At the end of four days of workshops, 8 young
musicians from each partner region gathered to
    play their respective tunes.
  • The concert concluded with the complete band of
young people playing tunes from each of the
regions, which they had all learned together.
  • --gt video clip 5 3 regional tunes and a
combined band play together in Allendale

14
SNAP05 Ploërmel/Hälsingland
  • SNAP05 will continue with musical workshops in
Ploërmel during the first week in July, and in
Hälsingland during the first week in August..
  • The young musicians will play together in
informal village hall concerts throughout Coeur
de Bretagne, and in a joint Music Festival
    showcase performance.
  • In Hälsingland, the work will involve polishing
the repertoire, a prolonged recording session for
the SNAP05 CD, and a live concert performance
    before an estimated 10,000 people.

July 2005
15
SNAP05 Immediate Future
  • A SNAP05 CD will be professionally recorded and
produced, for distribution and sale in each
    partner region
  • We are investigating the creation of a SNAP05
    DVD involving professional video/film workers
    from each region
  • The SNAP05 Tunebook, providing all the musical
notation of the final recorded elements of the
SNAP05 CD, will be produced by the end of 2005.
This Tunebook will also involve some elements of
a scrapbook design, showcasing useful historical,
geographical and cultural background aspects of
    each partner region

16
SNAP05 Local Support
  • The SNAP project involves local businesses and
enterprises in each region, providing much-needed
support for local employers and employees in the
    touristic field.
  • These important local support functions mean that
the LEADER programme in the North Pennines is
fulfilling its brief on the Improving our
    Quality of Life theme.

SNAP New Ideas and Self-Sustainability
  • New ideas are always developing in SNAP, ranging
from international folk music degree courses at
university level, to a new transnational network
    of music promoters.
  • In addition, the SNAP project is moving toward
    self-sustainability, with increased self-funding
expected during 2006 by the young musician
    participants.

18
SNAP From Idea to Action
  1. Ownership the project concept must be shared
and owned by each partner the SNAP idea
    encapsulates this premise
  2. Feasibility budgets including travel, logistics
and accommodation must be absolutely realistic
and achievable, and the time scales practicable
    cashflow issues!
  3. Organisation activities must be carefully
organised, with each partner working to
understand what the other partners want and
expect. Each partner must be prepared to modify
expectations, and delivery, to suit each other.
Mutual resilience is crucial for projects to
    succeed.
  4. Publicity in each area, publicity helps to
encourage each partner that the project is valued
    in their partners region
  5. Communication email and telephone contact offer
immediacy which is important to all partners.
