Title: Mobile Networks of Sensing Systems:

1
Mobile Networks of Sensing Systems toward an
Interagency Glider Consortium
Oscar Schofield, Mary Jane Perry, Dan Rudnick
2
Mobile platforms have matured since the original
DEOS committee and the subsequent birthing of OOI
and ORION. Potential integrating technology.
Critical for revolutionary advances.
All coastal arrays required significant mobile
sensing systems to resolve the horizontal and
vertical variability. RCO also specifies mobile
sensing networks. Global buoys require context
that can be provided by mobile networks.

100 Gliders over next decade because of planned
needs and demonstrated capabilities

Development of an ONR Glider consortium In brief
Goal is to expand glider expertise, usability,
availibility for ONR researchers. To be
facilitated by a centralized institution (still
to be determined) that manages ONR gliders being
acquired by three technical centers. Each center
has a fleet of specific gliders.
Overseen by APL (N. Bogue)
Webb Gliders (Rutgers)
Spray Gliders (Scripps)
Sea Gliders (UW)
These are ONR assets will be available to support
ONR experiments. Analogous to UNOLs asset.
10
Global Command and Control Relatively Robust
11
Goals also include improving improve and
standardize command control (ease Navy
transition), procedures for lithium batteries
(handling etc.), improved ship operations,
training and transition

For ORION?
-ALPS has had three organizing meetings (San
Diego, Paris, Stevensville) yet is still
developing its funding home. -ORION should
leverage of existing efforts. How? How best to
entrain the program managers or should a group
go write to compete for more ORION assets (2
million was initial ONR investment in glider
fleets for the technical centers)? NOPP? PI
alone? MSI? -ONR is currently less likely to
loan assets, however is likely to be amenable to
partnering. Might an ONR model provide a useful
model for ORION researchers? Might existing
consortia be expanded at lower costs?

Action Items
  • A ORION white paper of steps forward for mobile
assets to be available at the DI workshop
  • Finish the mobile asset web portal for ORION web
    site
  • Continue to build ONR collaborative partnership
