Title: Warmup:

1
Warm-up
  • Someday, Im going to construct a basketball
court in my backyard. Ill start by preparing a
flat spot that is 36 ? 50 for the court. The
court will be made by pouring concrete to a
thickness of .5 ft over the whole area. How many
yards of concrete should I order?
  • (Hint A yard is short for one cubic yard,
which is sometimes written as 1 yd3.)

2
Dimensional Analysis
  • Dimensional analysis includes converting a
quantitys value from one set of units to
    another.
  • For example 1 mile 5280 ft
  • The quantity doesnt change, only the units.

3
Dimensional Analysis
  • The two key ideas of Dimensional Analysis
  • 1. What number makes this true 4 _ 4?
  • Fact we can multiply by 1 as many times as we
like without changing the value of the quantity.

4
Dimensional Analysis
  • The two key ideas of Dimensional Analysis
  • 2. What is 7/7 ?
  • How about 1023/1023 ?
  • And x/x ?
  • Fact anything divided by itself is equal to 1.

5
Dimensional Analysis
  • Question What do the following have in common?
  • 3 tennis balls / 1 can
  • 12 slices / 1 pizza
  • 1 foot / 12 inches
  • Answer They are all equal to 1!!!
  • (two names for the same objectuse fact 2)

6
Dimensional Analysis
  • Put the two facts together to find out how many
seconds there are in 12 hours

Dimensional Analysis
  • Solve this one using the Train Track Method
  • How many inches are in 1 meter?
  • Use 1 in 2.54 cm

16
Dimensional Analysis
  • Think youre good?
  • Try converting 10 mph (mi/hr) into yd/s using the
    Train Track Method.

Dimensional Analysis
  • Copy these conversion factors into your notes or
print them off from the website
  • 1 mile 5280 ft 1 in 2.54 cm
