The Corridor in a nutshell

• Purpose Create peace in middle east
• Japan feels that the only starting point for
  lasting peace is via the implementation of a two
  state solution. (Pretty much everyone including
  our very own dear Condi Ricecake feel the same
  way about that)
• Japan recognizes that the lack of economic
  strength is a serious barrier for the successful
  creation of a Palestinian state.
• Japan proposes an economic partnering between
  Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian people to lay
  the groundwork for a sustainable economy based on
  agriculture.
• The economic groundwork would consist of the
  creation of agro-industrial parks and
  transportation systems for the movement of goods.

Conclusion/Updates

• Several projects have begun already as shown on
  the first slide.
• March 2007 Japan promises US 100 million to the
  Corridor for Peace project. (Interesting note
  this promise came post - Hamas control of
  Palestine)
• Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinians are all in
  favor of this plan.
• Japan probably has a unique advantage in
  perceived neutrality. (i.e. No recent mass
  bombings or takeovers of any countries in the
  region.) Perhaps this can make them a very
  effective mediator in comparison to George W Bush
  and Dick Dick Cheney.
