Title: Humpty Dumpty
1(No Transcript)
2Lessons Learned
- The mass and velocity are fixed.
- You can not control the energy in an event.
- But you can try and direct it.
3A hard shell will direct energy around the object
But it needs to be symmetrical so that the
forces are balanced.
4A cradle will cushion the occupant and absorb the
initial moment of momentum. Notice that there is
only one point of contact between the cradle and
the force.
5Mother Natures Solution
It is not about the package but the time of
deceleration. http//www.youtube.com/watch?vZHOT

6Humpty Dumpty
The egg is designed to protect it self from all
sorts of energy events. Its shape keeps it
dynamically stable and if it will tend to rotate
to place the wider oval end at the impact point.
This point is the furthest from the all important
germinal disc.
Is this a good idea or what?
7Humpty Dumpty
The egg shell will crack before it breaks which
moves energy around the perimeter and not into
the interior.
But sometimes the energy is just too much!
8The yolk surrounds the germinal disc providing a
layer of cushioning in which the nuclei is
suspended. It is held in place by two twisted
strands of a mucous material called the chalazas.
The yolk is suspended like a cradle.

10Between the inner and out layers of protection is
a liquid gel called the albumen. This is the egg
white and provides a cushion for the more
delicate yolk. Around it all is two layers or
membranes that serve to isolate and protect the
egg core from contamination. They also disperse
force.

12New Lessons Learned
- Your container should be egg shaped with a
designated end for impact. - Locate the egg further away from this point as
reasonable without compromising the aerodynamics
of the vehicle. - Construct a hard outer shell to spread force
around and through the structure.
13New Lessons Learned
- Build a cradle to suspend your egg in side the
vehicle. - Build in force modifiers that will extend the
time it takes for the energy to reach the cradle.
14Just like NASA and the Hen! With one end designed
for an energy event in one direction and the
other end .
15Designed to handle energy from another direction!
16Next step
- Turn in your sketch and mission statement for a
grade. - Review the parameters of the challenge and
determine what, if anything you need to rethink
and redesign. - Collect your egg. Get acquainted. Feel the
love. Name him or her. These eggs will be
staying with me in the staff refrigerator while
they are waiting to go to Mars.
17Next step
- What other parts of this challenge do you need to
practice? - Set a date for completion and testing.
- Ready, Set and Go!
