Title: Education and Training Task Force

1
Education and Training Task Force
  • Strategies and Policies

2
Austrian Presidency
  • Mandate
  • Education and Training in the use of
e-Infrastructure are necessary to realise its
potential. They will benefit from shared
    practice, coordination and compatible policies,
and access to shared education and training
    material and support systems.
  • Recommendations
  • Investment in education and training should be
made so that the full potential of
e-Infrastructures may be realised for EU citizens
  • Significant investment in education should be
directed towards improving understanding as to
how e-Infrastructure may be exploited effectively
  • Investment in training and education should be
directed improving the ERAs capacity to develop,
deploy and manage e-Infrastructure and the
    applications that use e-Infrastructure
  • Policies and standards for the coordination,
    collaborative support, interchange and mutual
    recognition of e-Infrastructure should be
    developed across the ERA

3
Education and Training
  • Training
  • Targeted
  • Immediate goals
  • Specific skills
  • Building a workforce
  • Education
  • Pervasive
  • Long term and sustained
  • Generic conceptual models
  • Developing a culture
  • Both are needed

4
European Policy Context
  • Lisbon Strategy (Growth and Jobs)
  • Pertaining policies
  • Education and Training 2010
  • i2010
  • European Research Area (Green Paper and Lisbon
    Conference)

5
Computational Thinking
  • Movements towards
  • computational thinking
  • Jeannette Wing
  • Communications of the ACM,
  • March 2006, Vol 49, No. 3, p33-35
  • National level
  • State of computational thinking
  • education in the Member States
  • ? Your feedback

EDUCATION
7
Options for educators
  • Existing educational machinery
  • Curricula, courses etc.
  • Infrastructure, grid services etc.
  • Impediments to mobilising this machinery
  • Not a comprehensive repository of courses
  • (e.g. ICEAGE www.iceage-eu.org )
  • Resource sharing
  • Development of NGIs
  • Your feedback

8
Options for educators Trade-offs
  • Harmonisation
  • Skills transfer
  • Mobility
  • Credit transfer
  • Integration
  • Economies
  • Curriculum development
  • Organic process
  • Diversity
  • Cross fertilisation
  • Meeting national or discipline requirements
    faster
  • Response to rapidly changing domain

9
Other options
  • Options not covered your feedback

10
Scope for e-IRG
  • What is e-IRGs focus in education?
  • Your feedback

11
Strategies and Policies
  • Curriculum development
  • Certification
  • Sharing resources
  • Relationships

12
Strategy - Curriculum development
  • Build on discipline-specific computational
    thinking
  • Interdisciplinary applications of grids
  • Data-intensive and numerical computing
  • Collaborative working
  • Extended computational thinking
  • ? equip people for the evolving context
  • Grids in Computer Science education
  • Scalable distributed computing
  • Security and reliability
  • Distributed algorithms
  • Your feedback

13
Strategy - Certification
  • Build on current harmonisation and cooperation
  • Embrace the Bologna Process
  • Professional accreditation by accreditation
    bodies
  • Mutual recognition
  • Merge HTC HPC and grid for application domains

14
Strategy Resource Sharing
  • Educational material
  • Books, notes, exercises, example data? reducing
    the costs of developing material
  • t-Infrastructure
  • Shared provision
  • Student and staff mobility
  • Conditions of use
  • Security and Certification
  • IPR
  • Pertains to resource sharing ? Creative Commons
    vs. commercial opportunity?
  • Global vision
  • Europe should not be doing this alone ? global
    cooperation (e.g. OGF)

15
Strategy - Relationships
  • NGIs EGI
  • HPC (PRACE)
  • EIT
  • Multinational facilities
  • ESFRI Roadmap
  • Your feedback

16
Summary
  • Education and Training crucial to European
    success
  • Tasks
  • Clarify status of Grid Education in Member States
  • Develop a policy framework for grid education
  • Develop a policy framework for grid training
  • Delimit e-IRG role

17
Thank you for your contribution
  • Are there any volunteers and suggestions?
