  • CSU
  • SAT I or ACT (both are accepted. Cal Poly
    suggests students take both, but prefers the ACT)
    (Students with a GPA of 3.0 or above may be
    admitted without either test, however, they are
    encouraged to take the SAT 1 or ACT for
    supplementary criteria used for decision)
  • UC Most Private Universities
  • SAT I or ACT with Writing AND 2 SAT II Subject
    Tests (in 2 different areas)
  • whatever subjects will receive the highest score.

Score?
  • The SAT 1 (Reasoning Test) is scored out of a
    possible 2400 points.
  • 800 for math
  • 800 for essay
  • 800 for multiple choice verbal
  • Each college and university publishes the average
    scores of students admitted by year. See School
    Profile for each university.

  • Applicants need to respond to all three short
    answer questions using a total of 1,000 words.
  • Two of your answers must be limited to
    approximately 200 words each. A third question
    should be given an extended answer of at least
    600 words. You may choose which question to
    answer at more length

Recommendation for Private Colleges
  • Fill out personal profile
  • Ask teacher/coach/employer and counselor for a
    letter of recommendation
  • Make sure that you ask for letters of
    recommendation with at least 3 weeks before due
    date
  • Letters of Recommendation are mailed out
    separately by the counselor

    semester senior grades
  • In June request final transcript to be picked up
    and mailed to college by student.

ProgramAnother pathway for students
  • Students are identified as eligible for DAP at
    the beginning of their senior year and invited to
    apply to UC in November
  • DAP students who apply and are admitted to a
    specific UC campus will be guaranteed a place
    provided they complete an academic contract at a
    California Community College

  • Eligibility is determined via the ELC transcript
    review process and identifies promising students
    who rank near the top of their high school class,
    but who have not met all of the requirements to
    attend UC straight out of high school.

California
  • Transfer Programs
  • Community colleges offer a full range of academic
    courses, covering the first two years of college,
    that enable a student to prepare to transfer to a
    U.C. or C.S.U. campus or to a private college.
  • A community college counselor will help you
    organize your program so that it will be
    accepted, especially by a U.C. or CSU campus, and
    you will not lose any credits when you transfer.

    coursework at a community college makes you
    eligible for transferring.
  • Admissions Tests
  • No college admission tests are required. However
    if you are thinking of transferring to a private
    college it is recommended that you take the SATs
    during high school.

  • You need to be a high school graduate
  • Or have passed the GED (general educational
    development)
  • Or be at least 18 years of age
  • Community College Is A Good Choice If
  • You wish to attend, for one or two years, a
    college that will give you training needed to
    enter a vocation.
  • You wish to begin college while remaining in your
    community
  • You are not sure of the academic field you wish
    to pursue
  • You plan to complete a four year college program,
    however, for financial reasons it may not be
    possible.

Options What Do I Want As A Career?
  • Should I Go To College?-if the answer is yes
    explore career opportunities at the same time.
  • Vocational schools/correspondence schools-these
    may be more appropriate than a public institution
    for the following fields-art, modeling, court
    reporting, and fashion design.
  • Armed Forces-they offer many training programs
    that prepare students for civilian jobs
  • On the job training- frequently companies will
    train on the job and may require only a high
    school diploma.
  • U.S. Job Corps- offers programs that provide
    educational and vocational training.

  • Center for Employment Training (CET)-offers job
    training and placement programs
  • Americorps-Ten month program offers young people
    the opportunity to gain experience in a number of
    areas while helping the environment and/or other

  • California Conservation Corps (CCC)-Hires young
    people, 18-23, to work for one year on a variety
    of environmental and community projects and to
    respond to such emergencies as forest fires and
