2 Literary Response and Analysis
3Vocabulary
- Flashback the scene shifts and goes back in
time. - Foreshadowing gives clues about what will happen
later in the story.
4Order
Authors dont always start at the beginning of a
story and pass smoothly on to the end. Sometimes
they start in the middle of the story, go forward
a bit, then back a bit, then forward again to
finish off. Authors do this to make you more
interested in their stories.
- Stories arent always told in order. Writers like
to jump form one time to another.
5 - If a book starts with an odd situation say a
hot air balloon landing on the Eiffel Tower it
makes you wonder whats going on.
6 - Monsieur Augustine lay unconscious in the
corner of the basket. Helen crept forward and
looked over the edge. Hundreds of feet below the
dark streets lay silent and empty. Above, the
balloon was caught by the wind. The basket began
to drop.
7 - If the story then branches off to a different
time its because the author wants to get you
hooked.
8 - Fog was rolling over the Bay. Monsieur
Augustine was cold. He did 100 push-ups on the
floor of his cell.
9 - Now you might be wondering
- Whether Monsieur Augustine was in jail before or
after the balloon accident - How Monsieur Augustine ended up in the balloon
- What will happen next to Helen
- So you want to read on.
10Flashback
- Flashbacks get used frequently in the movies.
What happens is that the story is going along
nicely in the present, and suddenly the scene
shifts to the week before or some years before.
11Flashback
A story about an adult could dip in and out of
their childhood.
12Flashback
A story about a family could switch around from
one generation to another.
13Flashback
Crime stories often have flashbacks to explain
how the crime was committed.
14 - When the flashback is over, the scene returns to
the present.
15Foreshadowing
- Foreshadowing gives clues about whats going to
happen later on in the story.
16Foreshadowing
In The Jungle Book Baloo and Bagheera warn Mowgli
that the monkeys are trouble.
Later on Mowgli gets kidnapped by the monkeys.
17Foreshadowing
Everything they predict comes true though not
always the way Macbeth expects.
At the start of Macbeth the Witches predict what
will happen to Macbeth.
