2EDIFICATION
3 Which is more important breaking down or
building up? Which is of greater importance
cleaning house, or making the house stronger?
- The bible clearly instructs us to attempt to
correct errant behavior Galatians 61 - But even this is to be done "in a spirit of
gentleness". One of the primary goals of all
discipline is to correct the behavior. This is
accomplished through edification.
4 The word "edify" is found frequently in the New
Testament, translated from the Greek word
oikodome (18 times) or oikodomeo (39 times).
Strong says the first word means "the act of
building up metaphorically, of edifying,
edification' and the second is used
metaphorically "to found, establish ... to
promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection,
grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness."
5GODS CONCERNOVER EDIFICATION
6The reason for the apostles power
- 2 Corinthians 1310 Therefore I write these
things being absent, lest being present I should
use sharpness, according to the authority which
the Lord has given me for edification and not for
destruction.
7One reason for the organization of the church
- Ephesians 411-16
- 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and
teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for
the work of ministry, for the edifying of the
body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity
of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ 14 that we
should no longer be children, tossed to and fro ..
8One reason for the organization of the church
- and carried about with every wind of doctrine,
by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness
of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth
in love, may grow up in all things into Him who
is the head-- Christ-- 16 from whom the whole
body, joined and knit together by what every
joint supplies, according to the effective
working by which every part does its share,
causes growth of the body for the edifying of
itself in love. -
9ONE REASON WE MUST COUNSEL ONE ANOTHER
10Romans 1514 Now I myself am confident concerning
you, my brethren, that you also are full of
goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to
admonish one another.
- Acts 2031 "Therefore watch, and remember that
for three years I did not cease to warn everyone
night and day with tears.
Colossians 128 Him we preach, warning every man
and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may
present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
11Those congregationally disciplined are included
- 2 Thessalonians 314,15 14 And if anyone does not
obey our word in this epistle, note that person
and do not keep company with him, that he may be
ashamed. 15 Yet do not count him as an enemy, but
admonish him as a brother.
12Qualities of a counselor - Love - Knowledge -
Wisdom
- Proverbs 11-7
- 1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king
of Israel 2 To know wisdom and instruction, to
perceive the words of understanding, 3 To receive
the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and
equity 4 To give prudence to the simple, to the
young man knowledge and discretion-- 5 A wise man
will hear and increase learning, and a man of
understanding will attain wise counsel,
13Qualities of a counselor Love - Knowledge -
Wisdom
- 6 To understand a proverb and an enigma, the
words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear
of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
14PRACTICAL POINTS
15The stronger we are individually the more capable
we will be in edifying others.
How do I get stronger?
16Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up
on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Spirit, Romans 1017 So then faith comes by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Acts
2032 "So now, brethren, I commend you to God and
to the word of His grace, which is able to build
you up and give you an inheritance among all
those who are sanctified.
172 Timothy 215 Be diligent to present yourself
approved to God, a worker who does not need to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2
Timothy 22 And the things that you have heard
from me among many witnesses, commit these to
faithful men who will be able to teach others
also.
18How do I build others up?
19Speech Ephesians 429 Let no corrupt word proceed
out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary
edification, that it may impart grace to the
hearers. Assembly Hebrews 1024-25 24 And let us
consider one another in order to stir up love and
good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of
ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but
exhorting one another, and so much the more as
you see the Day approaching.
20EXAMPLE 1 Peter 31-2 31 Wives, likewise, be
submissive to your own husbands, that even if
some do not obey the word, they, without a word,
may be won by the conduct of their wives, 2 when
they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by
fear.
