Review

• Aerobic requires oxygen or in the presence of
  oxygen
• Anaerobic lacks oxygen

Anaerobic

• Fermentation- deriving energy from the oxidation
  of sugars without using oxygen.
• Produces lactic acid, ethanol, vinegar
• Without oxygen, there is no Kreb cycle or
  Electron Transport Chain
• Pyruvate cannot be broken down but can be used to
  regenerate NAD molecules for further glycolysis.
• This means continued production of 2 ATP (during
  glycolysis) but no further ATP production.

Why have Anaerobic then?

• Oxygen is lethal to some organisms
• Single Oxygen or hydrogen peroxide can be highly
  toxic
• Good for bursts of energy, very poor for
  sustained energy use.

Oxygen Debt

• Lactic Acid- builds up during oxygen deprivation
  but can be broken down once oxygen is restored.
• Also found in yogurt, cottage cheese, and other
  soured milk products.

Push-Up activity

• Collect qualitative data on
• 1 minute of Push-ups (x2)
• Push-ups without breathing
• Push-ups taking a breath in the up position
• Observing partner notes the type of breathing
  pattern after the push-up partner finishes.
• Push-up partner describes muscle response to each
  type of push-up.
• Create a simple table to show of push-ups and
  rates of breathing after exercise.
