Title: Miscue Analysis Revisited
1Miscue Analysis Revisited
2Session activities
- Discuss an example
- Consider the rationale for the use of MA
- Trial the process
- Review the results
- Consider other applications
- Discuss strengths and limitations of the strategy
-
3Actual vs. read text
- Now John Cameron lived alone ? apart from his
household robot. And his life certainly did run
smoothly. Some people changed their robots
programme every day and left it in the Transit
position, that is, ready to receive orders. But
not John. - He was a rigid man who hated change. He wanted
every day to be the same as the one before. So
HIS robot was programmed once and for all.

4Rationale for miscue analysis
- Miscue analysis is a tool for looking closely at
the types of reading strategies a reader uses.
The kinds of miscues (incorrect guesses) a reader
makes when reading from a text will give the
listener clues about how familiar or unfamiliar
the reader finds the content matter, and how easy
or difficult they find the text to read. - (Miscue analysis retrieved 8 August 2009 from
- http//rwp.excellencegateway.org.uk/readwriteplus/
bank/Miscue20Analysis.pdf)
5Goodmans (1969) principles underpinning miscue
analysis
- Reading is based on 3 cueing systems
- grapho/phonic system of letter-sound
relationships - syntactic syntax (grammar) system
- semantic meaning system
6Practice text The Yellow Wallpaper
There is a lovely garden! I never saw such a
garden! It is large and shady with paths and
seats. There were greenhouses, but they are
all broken now. The place has been empty for
years. There is something strange about it I
can feel it. I even said so to John one moonlit
evening, but he said what I felt was draught,
and shut the window.
7Applications of miscue analysis
- Retrospective miscue analysis with proficient
adult ESL readers - We found RMA discussions changed all of the
readers perceptions of themselves they
benefitted from a more informed view of the
reading process. In the process of discovering
what real reading was, they discovered themselves
as readers. - (Wurr, Theurer Kim, 2009).
8Applications of miscue analysis
- Orally reading written texts for the purpose of
checking for - meaning
- incorrect spelling
- odd sentence structure
- incorrect or no punctuation
