Title: Explaining an Experiment
1Explaining an Experiment
- Question - What I want to know?
This is an experiment to find out how the ear
detects sound.
2Explaining an Experiment
- Background Material Facts I already know.
Sound enters the outer ear and then travels
through the ear canal to the middle ear. Then the
sound causes the ear drum to vibrate. These
vibrations move through three tiny bones in the
inner ear before turning into signals that are
sent to the brain. These signals are then decoded
by the brain and we recognize the sound.
3Explaining an Experiment
- Hypothesis What I think will happen.
I believe that in this experiment the plastic
wrap on the top of the bowl will act like the
eardrum and the rice will move when the pan is
struck.
4Explaining an Experiment
- Materials What do I need to do this experiment?
For this experiment you will need an empty bowl,
a sheet of plastic wrap, a metal spoon, a
tablespoon of uncooked rice, and a metal pan.
5Explaining an Experiment
First, stretch the plastic wrap across the top of
the bowl. Second, place some grains of rice on
top of the wrap. Then take the metal pan and
place it over the bowl. Make sure the pan does
not touch the bowl. Finally, strike the pan with
the spoon.
6Explaining an Experiment
- Observations/ Results What happened?
Guess what happened? The rice moved as the pan
was struck by the spoon. The noise was like
someone banging on a steel drum.
7Explaining an Experiment
- Conclusions What I learned.
By banging on the pan the sound waves traveled to
the bowl. The rice moved because the sound waves
made the plastic wrap vibrate. I learned that the
vibration moved the uncooked rice like an eardrum
vibrates in the ear.
