- Farmers formed Populist Party to achieve goals of
farmers and working class - End gold standard
- Create income tax for rich
- Make eight-hour workday
- Change Constitution to allow for direct election
of senators - Populist Party died when their issues were
adopted by Democratic and Republican Parties - Populists were generally rural Americans.

- Farmers still could not earn enough money to pay
debts - Farmers blamed gold standard for debt problem
- All paper money was backed by gold
- Government could not print new money without
buying gold - Population increased, so demand for money
increased - Value of money increased due to scarcity
(deflation) - Deflation caused drop in prices of goods and
services - Crop prices kept falling but debt kept growing
with interest - Bankers wanted to keep the gold standard because
it was making them rich the value of their
money was always growing - Farmers wanted both gold and silver
- Would increase money supply
- Increase supply would lead to inflation
- Inflation would increase prices but not debts or
interest rates - Increased crop prices would help farmer pay debts
