1
Mrs. Acosta's Fifth Grade
Super Stars
Scott Libby / 2009-2010
2
Morning Arrival
730-800
All students should walk to their classroom to
drop off their backpacks. Students will then be
required to go to the playground when they arrive
at school. However, any student needing to
purchase a breakfast will need to head over to
the cafeteria first. A five minute warning bell
will ring to prompt students to return to class.
3
Morning Arrival
800-810
Once the 800 bell rings, I will take attendance
immediately afterwards. Students will need to
take this time to prepare their materials for the
day. This includes laying out their
binders/agendas and sharpening pencils if
necessary. This will also be a time to listen
attentively to the morning announcements.
4
Classroom Management
Our grade level will be participating in a form
of Micro Society. Under this system, each student
will learn his/her role as a citizen in our
community. Students will receive a Roadrunner
Accountability Card at the beginning of every
week. They have a chance to earn credits or
possibly debits depending on the choices they
make.
5
Specials
815-850
During this part of our day, students will either
be in Music with Miss S. or PE with Coach Woods.
We will not have a regular scheduled library time
but will visit it as a class frequently for
checkout purposes. Students will also be getting
art instruction with Mrs. Dickenson every other
day 6.
6
Langauge Arts
850-1005
This will probably be the best part of the day if
you are a book lover. We will be using this time
for Reading and Writing Workshop. Students will
also be joining literature groups (aka Book
Clubs) once they understand how to be an active
participant in rich literature discussions.
7
Intervention/ Enrichment
1015-1115
Students will be assigned a work room to either
receive intervention services or to receive
enrichment time. The exact types of intervention
and enrichment will be determined by the fifth
grade teachers and will change throughout the
year.
8
Math
1120-1230
We will be working on our problem solving skills
and other project based activities. Excel will be
used but only for homework and drill purposes. I
will also be dividing the class into small work
groups by the end of the month.
9
Lunch-n- Recess
1230-115
Students will be escorted to the cafeteria by
their teacher and will sit at designated tables.
Playground assistants will then escort all
students to the playground where they will be
picked up by their teachers. It is a good idea to
take out a water bottle. Lunch boxes will be
dropped off in a lunch tub outside of the
cafeteria.
10
D.E.A.R. Time/ Read Aloud
120-130
After lunch students will be given a time to read
quietly by themselves or the teacher will read a
portion of a book to the class.
11
Social Studies
130-200
This year we will be using Social Studies Weekly
Newspaper. It covers the time in our nations
history from early colonization to the aftermath
of the Civil War. Students will be involved in a
variety of projects which will later be posted on
our class website.
12
Science
200-235
Science will be taught using interactive hands on
units. We will explore rocketry, simple machines,
the human skeletal system and the history of
science. We will learn about the scientific
method and how to design and conduct experiments.
13
Afternoon Dismissal
235-245
Students will use this time of the day to pack
their belongings and complete an exit card about
a particular aspect of our day. Teacher will
escort students to the east end of the campus
where they will be released. Students riding the
buses will board immediately!
14
Homework
Every week, students will be assigned spelling,
math, and reading homework. All of the homework
handouts will be posted on the class website
under the Homework Hotline tab. Homework may also
consist of unfinished class work or special
projects.
15
Communication
I will always be available to help you in any way
I can. I designed a class website that should be
helpful to you when you are away from school. I
will always do my best to check my email in the
evenings in case you have questions or comments
you want to share. Students will also have an
opportunity to blog their thoughts on a variety
of social studies and science related issues and
share them with the rest of the class. Teacher
