11Summary of major tenets of SIT and SCT (Hogg
Terry, 2002)
- Tajfel (1972) Social identity- the
individuals knowledge that he belongs to a
certain social group together with some emotional
and value significance of this membership. - When category is salient It describes and
prescribes feeling, behavior and thought. These
become in-group and out-group stereotypical. - Two basic processes in social identity processes
(a) categorization and (b) self-enhancement. - Basic Belief Structures Beliefs people have
about relations between their group and the
out-group. - Refer to perceptions of Legitimacy and Stability
of inter-group status relations and possibility
of social mobility. -
12Summary of major tenets of SIT and SCT (Hogg
Terry, 2002)
- SCT Categorization into in-group and out-group
accentuates in-group similarity and out-group
dissimilarity. - Targets are not perceived as individuals, but as
embodiments of a particular prototype A process
of depersonalization. Explains normative
behavior, stereotyping, altruism, etc., - Some group members are more prototypical than
others. - An important second motivation that is satisfied
by categorization Reduction of uncertainty. - Uncertainty is better reduced by prototypes that
are simple, clear and consensual. Such prototypes
describes highly cohesive groups and high level
of entitativity. - Such prototypes more attractive for people who
have great need to reduce uncertainty, or during
times of uncertainty.
