Title: Microteaching Project

1
Microteaching Project
  • Matthew Lutton
  • Business Education

2
Unit and Lesson Information
  • Unit Title
  • Using Spreadsheet Applications Effectively
  • Lesson Title
  • Using Simple Formulas to Solve Problems
  • Standard Met
  • Indianas Technology Productivity Tools -
Spreadsheet Standard 7- Use Simple Formulas to
    Solve Problems

3
Lesson Objectives
  • Behavior Be able to use Microsoft Excel to
calculate basic formulas such as sums and
averages effectively. Students will sit at a
computer and experiment with simple formulas.
  • Condition Students will receive a demonstration
on how to calculate simple formulas in Excel, and
they may refer to the text for more information
    on spreadsheet formulas.
  • Criterion Students will at least be able to
demonstrate the calculations of sums and averages
using Microsoft Excel with 100 accuracy.

4
Resources/Materials
  • Computer with projector and pull down screen (for
    teacher)
  • Computer for every student
  • Microsoft Excel 2003 on all computers
  • Worksheet from previous class period
  • Textbook (Exploring Microsoft Excel 2003,
Comprehensive by Grauer and Barber, Prentice
    Hall, Inc., 2003. pp 185-186)

5
We Went Over Last Periods HW First(Identify
Cell, Column, and Row)
6
Then I Asked the Class About the HW
QuestionHow Could Spreadsheets be Useful?
Volunteers answered, and I typed
  • Businesses can keep track of information
  • Teachers can keep track of grades
  • Sports stats can be recorded

7
I created the cognitive hook by reviewing sums
and averages while students contributed at will
(below is my review)
  • What is a Sum?
  • SUMTotal
  • Sum of 22 is 4, Sum of 513 is 9.
  • What are Averages?
  • AverageSum divided by number of variables
  • If you had 5432115, you would take the total
of 15, then divide by the number of variables (5)
    to get the average 3

8
Then I Gave Students These Reasons for Using
Excel Outside the Classroom
  • Very easy to use once you are familiar with it
  • Saves time if you have a large amount of numbers
    to calculate
  • You can make spreadsheets very attractive if you
    want
  • ALSO-Computers are being used more and more (in
schools, workplaces, and at home). It is
important that you understand what tools are
    available to you.

9
Lesson Concluded
  • The microteaching segment of the lesson concluded
with my showing the class how to calculate sums
    in three different ways
  • Using the function bar
  • Using Auto SUM Button on Toolbar
  • Manually typing in calculations in cells (for
example to put total in cell A3, type
    sum(A1A2)

10
Peer/Teacher Evaluation of Microteaching
Presentation
  • My peers were very generous. Out of 13
evaluations, I received eleven 5/5s, and two
    4/5s.
  • Average Peer Evaluation 4.85/5.0
  • Teacher Evaluation 5.0/5.0
