3Who is CENELEC? (1/3)
- CENELEC, the European Committee for
Electrotechnical Standardisation, is a non-profit
making, international association founded in 1973
- It develops electrotechnical standards as a basis
for the European market without internal barriers
for electrotechnical goods, services and
associated technologies.
4Who is CENELEC? (2/3)
- All CENELEC standards are implemented
identically as national standards in the 29
member countries. - All conflicting national standards must be
withdrawn.
5Who is CENELEC? (3/3)
- 29 full Members All 25 members of the European
Union and Norway, Iceland, Switzerland Romania.
One member per country. - 8 Affiliates Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina
Bulgaria, Croatia, FYROM, Serbia Montenegro,
Turkey, Ukraine - 36 Co-operating Partners, i.e. Industrial and
social federations which contribute to and advise
on standardisation matters in their respective
field of expertise

10Standards as a Global Reference
- In the context of the ever increasing
international trade volume, standards - are a reference point for all interested parties
- have greatly helped to overcome trade barriers
- facilitate market access and economic
integration.

- WTO members are invited to use International
Standards as a basis for their technical
regulations. - IEC standards are the main source of reference
for developing CENELEC European Standards.

- CENELEC cooperates with IEC through the
- Dresden Agreement
- i.e.
- Common planning of new work.
- Parallel procedures on draft International
Standards. - Conversion of European Standards and drafts
into International Standards.
