Title: Making Good Progress Progression pilot
1Making Good ProgressProgression pilot
- Area pilot leader meetings November 2008
2Progression ready?
- Why progression?
- Progression is at the heart of learning .
- Every Child Matters
- All levels, not some levels
- All years, not one year
- All teachers, not some teachers.
- All schools , not some schools
3Schools which make great progress
- The heads have created time and capacity at
senior level . - They track pupils systematically, regularly and
rigorously. - Curriculum planning is cross-hatched by year and
by subject .. - Policies are top to toe using layered objectives
. - They prioritise the quality of teaching and
learning and tend to be inductive and inclusive . -
4Implications for assessment in KS3.
- Neither SATS nor SLTS in KS3.
- Increased significance of APP for Heads to
monitor cohorts . - Likely that we will take national samples to
track trends . - Expert group will recommend new measures.
- National targets at KS3 will be stood down
- Likely to move to KS2-4.
- Pilot schools will continue to collect TA data
each term. - Progress measures are likely to appear in the
school report card .

6Securing progression readiness focusing on the
AFL Strategy
- Every child .
- Every teacher.
- Every school .
- Every parent and carer .
7AfL strategy overall aims
- Every pupil
- knows how they are doing, understands what they
need to do to improve and how to get there - gets the support they need to keep them on an
ambitious trajectory of improvement
8AfL strategy overall aims
- Every teacher
- understands the concepts and skills of
progression - is equipped to make well-founded judgements about
pupils attainment - knows how to use assessment information to plan
learning and teaching which accelerates progress
9AfL strategy overall aims
- Every school has in place assessment
- processes and systems
- for making regular, useful, manageable and
accurate assessments of pupils progress - for tracking their progress
10AfL strategy overall aims
- Every parent and carer
- Knows how their child is doing, what they need to
do to improve - and how they can support the child and their
teachers
11Discussion
- If the Assessment For Learning Strategy is
embedded within a school how would the behaviour
of - the school,
- the teacher and
- the pupil
- the parents/carer
- be different ?
