1(No Transcript)
2Transfer Switch General Review
3Introduction
This presentation will provide you with an
overview of Transfer Switches with an emphasis on
the Russelectric type.
At the end of this presentation, you will be able
to determine the use, application, operation,
advantages and differences of Russelectric
Transfer Switches.
r
4Definition
- Per NEC - An automatic or non-automatic device
for transferring one or more load conductor
connections from one power source to another
r
5Standards
- The Primary Standard is UL 1008
- Other Applicable Standards are ANSI, IEEE and
NEMA
r
6Models Available
- RMT - Single electric operator
- RMTD - dual electric operated
- RMTMAN or RMTDMAN -Electrically Operated or
Manually Operated
r
7RMT or RMTD Features
- High speed quick-break, quick-make, preloaded
transfer reducing contact erosion and increasing
longevity - Positive Mechanical and Electrical Interlocking
r
8RMT or RMTD Features continued
- Rapid and reliable arc quenching
- Safe Manual Operator or
- External Manual Operator for added protection
r
9RMT or RMTD Featurescontinued
- The RMT/D operating mechanism is unique in that
it provides the ability to manually transfer the
switch at full speed if the controls fail to do
so. - This means the contact speed is independent of
the speed of the manual operating handle reducing
arc flashing
r
10RMT or RMTD Features continued
- Front Connected Control Components and Wiring
- 600 Volt SIS wire, 18 AWG minimum
- Front Access 100 through 3000 amp for greater
installation flexibility
r
11Withstand RatingsThe Highest in the Industry
- 3 Cycle Close and Withstand _at_ 480Vac
- 100 - 400 Amps 42,000 Amps
- 600 - 800 Amps 65,000 Amps
- 1000 - 1200 Amps 85,000 Amps
- 1600 - 4000 Amps 100,000 Amps
r
12Switch Size Rating
- The switch is to be sized by two factors
- The Continuous Current Rating
- and
- The Available Fault Current (normally from the
Utility side)
r
13Applications
- RMT - Single Operator Life Safety, Critical,
and single ATS for entire Bldg - RMTD - Dual Operator Equipment Loads,
Transformers, Elevators and where Block Transfer
and Load Shed is used

RMTDDual Motor Operator Transfer Switch
R
15The RMTD
- Center-Off time delay for reducing/eliminating
regenerative voltage when transferring large
motors and/or transformers
r
16The RMTD Advantage
- The primary advantage is with the center off time
delay the voltage will decay on inductive type
loads such that switching between two live
sources is possible without tripping feeder
breakers
r
17Switching Inductive (Motor) Type Loads
- RMTD type transfer switch with Accessory 2D, the
center-off time delay (TNTD, TETD) - Accessory 23A, B or C - a means of controlling
the motor load prior to and/or after the transfer
of the switch - Accessory 27A or 27B - Synchronizing check relay
r
18The load source is disconnected for an adjustable
period to allow regenerative power to decay
19The Fourth Pole
- Used when the transfer switch is applied in a
4-wire system with ground fault protection - On all Russelectric switches when a switched
neutral is required the 4th pole is identical to
the other three poles
r
20Switched Neutral
The Russelectric Approach
Before
- One-Line of Neutral Bus (4th pole)
Fully Rated Fourth Pole, Switched neutral (Same
construction and withstand rating as the main
power poles)
21Overlapping Neutral

22Model 2000 Features
- Two Asynchronous serial ports with an industry
standard open architecture communications
protocol, RS422/485 for high-speed serial
communications. - A real time clock with NiCad battery back up
r
23Model 2000 Featurescontinued
- Self diagnostics which perform periodic checks of
memory, I/O and communication circuits, with a
watchdog/power fail circuit - Password protections allows for qualified and
authorized users only.
r
24Model 2000 Features continued
- Three phase under/over voltage and frequency,
phase sequence and voltage differential
monitoring on both sources - Logs the most recent ten transfer events
- Troubleshooting LEDs
r
25Model 2000 Featurescontinued
- Can be configured for nearly any application to
meet the customer and/or specification
requirements
