Important Windows Operations
  • Pointing and clicking
  • Move the cursor so that it is pointing to the
    object you want to select and then left click the
    mouse only once - This selects that object.
  • Double clicking
  • By left clicking an object twice (rapidly), you
    will open the program/file.
  • Right Clicking
  • By selecting an object and right clicking only
    once, you will bring up a sub menu of commands
    for this object.

  • Title Bar Displays the name of the file and the
    type of document.
  • Menu Bar Displays commands available for use in
    every document.
  • Tool Bar Displays the most frequently used
    operations.

Using the Start Menu
  • All of the software programs and utilities can be
    accessed through the Start menu
  • Most frequently used programs are listed in the
    left column
  • To open a program, left click two times
  • Also where you log off or shut down your computer

  • Right column contains windows utilities and
    folders
  • These folders are shortcuts to where you save
    files such as
  • (My Pictures) pictures,
  • (My Documents) - general files,
  • (My Computer) - all drives available on the
    computer

  • Single left click on All Programs
  • A new menu appears called the Programs Menu
  • Programs sorted by manufacturer / alphabetically

  • Open the Calculator Program.
  • (If the calculator doesnt appear on the far
    left column...Click on All Programs, then Click
    on Accessories, then Click on Calculator.)
  • Open a blank Word Document.
  • Open a blank Excel Document.

Switching Between Programs
  • It is not necessary to close every program before
    opening another.
  • To go back to a what you were working on, look at
    the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
  • Single left click on the program you want to
    maximize. (or press alt and tab to move between
    programs)

My Computer
C/ is also called the hard drive
D/ is normally a CD Drive or DVD Drive

A computer can have many drives on it. Most home
PCs will have a C/ , D/ , or E/. The E/ is
normally where a flash drive is plugged in.

Lets now Type a Word Document and Save The File
  • Type your note

  • Save your document
  • Click on the File menu and select Save As
  • Click on My Documents on the left side of the box
  • Type in My New Document for the name of the
    file
  • Click on the Save button

  • 1 - Click on the File menu
  • 2 - Select Print
  • - In the Print dialog box, click on OK
  • 3 - Close click on the red x

Viewing a Saved File
  • Click on the Start button
  • Select My Documents from the right column

  • Notice the information displayed on the left side
    of the screen about that file

  • To open the file double click on the documents
    icon (the little picture)

  • Right Click on the printer you want to make
    changes to.
  • Click on Printing Preferences.

  • Using these tabs you can change
  • The quality of the print,
  • pages per sheet,
  • double sided printing,
  • size of paper,
  • orientation,
  • etc.

Playing a Game
  • Playing Solitaire is a great way to work on mouse
    control.
  • To open
  • Click the Start Button
  • Click on All Programs
  • Click on Games
  • Follow the black arrow and click on Solitaire
  • Resize the window to full screen

  • To Play
  • To move a card, grab it with your mouse (right
    click and hold down the button)
  • Drag the card to place it on top of another one
  • To go to the next card in the stack, single left
    click on the deck.
  • To turn the stack of cards back over, single left
    click on the deck.
  • To begin a new game, single left click on the
    Game menu, and single left click on Deal.
  • To close the game, single left click on the red x
    in the upper right corner.
