Blackboard
  • Getting Started

Blackboard Login
  • Open up an Internet browser. e.g. Internet
    Explorer
  • Type http//classes.uaf.edu in the address bar
  • NOTE There is no www
  • From the Blackboard homepage
  • Click the login button

Account Login (first time users)
  • Your username is your UAF email address up to
    the _at_ symbol e.g. fsxyz_at_uaf.edu username fsxyz
  • Your password is yoursocial security
    numberwithout dashes.
  • Now click the login button

Forgot your Password?
  • Click the forgot your password link fromthe
    login page
  • Fill in the requested information
  • Fill in your first and last name and username
    OR first and last name and UA email address

  • Blackboard will send you an email to your UA
    email address with a link that will allow you to
    change your password, allowing you access to
    Blackboard.
  • Please note The system will not respond to
    requests from non-UA email addresses.

Welcome Page
  • The first page you see after you login is the
    Welcome page. From this page you can view all
    recent announcements and a list of all the
    classes you are taking on Blackboard. You can
    also view personal information and check your
    grades.

Tools
  • The tools area provides quick access to several
    features that appear with in the course sites.
  • You can add personal calendar events or personal
    tasks by clicking on Calendar or Tasks.
  • Check your grades for your classes under the My
    Grades link.

Change Password
  • The first time you login to Blackboard we
    recommend changing your password.
  • From the tools area click personal information
  • From the next window, click Change Password.
  • Type in a new password
  • Click submit

Courses in which you are participating
  • You should see all the courses you are taking
    under this heading. If you have a course on
    Blackboard and do not see it listed, you need to
    contact your instructor of that course.
  • To view your course click on the title of the
    course.

Course Toolbar
  • Announcements Displays important messages from
    instructors.
  • Course Information Displays course objectives
    and syllabus.
  • Course Documents Contains learning materials and
    lesson aids organized by your instructor.
  • Assignments Contains assignments posted by your
    instructor.
  • Communication You can send email, access
    discussion boards, use the Virtual Classroom,
    find the student roster, and access student group
    pages.
  • Virtual Classroom Contains an online chat area.
    All participants must be online at the same time.
  • Discussion Board You can discuss certain topics
    started by your instructor and view conversations
    other students have posted. Everyone does not
    have to be online at the same time.
  • External Links These are set by your instructor
    and contain useful websites related to your
    class.
  • Tools You can upload files to the Digital Drop
    Box, change your password, view the course
    calendar, check your grades, view the student
    manual and access Electric Blackboard.
  • Course map Allows easier course site navigation.

Courses in which you are participating
  • You should see all the courses you are taking
    under this heading. If you have a class on
    Blackboard and do not see it listed you need to
    contact your instructor of that course.
  • To view your course click on the title of the
    course.

Discussion Board
  • Click the Discussion Board button on the course
    toolbar.
  • If your instructor has this button enabled, you
    will be able to see a discussion forum similar to
    the one below. Click the blue title to add a
    message to the forum.

  • To reply to a message in the discussion board,
    click on the message link and click reply.
  • To respond to the thread, type your response in
    the message area. To preview the message click
    the preview button. Once the message is complete
    click the submit button.

Virtual Classroom
  • Click on the Virtual Classroom button from the
    course toolbar.
  • You can browse the archives from previous chat
    sessions or enter the virtual classroom.

  • To begin a chat session click on the Enter
    Virtual Classroom link.
  • The Tutornet Classroom window will display in a
    separate window. (note you must have a
    java-enabled browser to access the virtual
    classroom.)

Tools Button
  • Digital Drop Box allows you to automatically
    transfer large files to your instructor.
  • Edit Your Homepage allows you to add information
    about yourself. Click ROSTER under the
    COMMUNICATION button to see your classmates
    homepages.
  • Personal Information allows you to change your
    password.
  • Calendar allows you to add or view calendar
    events for this class.
  • Check Grades allows you to check your grades for
    this class.
  • Manual allows you to view and on-line Blackboard
    manual.
  • Tasks allows you to view or add tasks for your
    class.
  • Electric Blackboard allows you to take and save
    class notes. Only you will see the notes saved
    here.
  • Address Book lets you store personal addresses.

Digital Drop Box
  • From the tools area you can access your Digital
    Drop Box. From the Digital Drop Box page you can
    add a file or send a file.
  • To add a file to your own digital drop box click
    the Add File button.
  • Name and attach the file. Click submit
  • You get a pop-up message saying the file is
    added but it is not sent.

  • To send a file to your instructor click the Send
    File button.
  • To send a file to your instructor click the Add
    File button.
  • Name the file and browse to find it on your
    computer. Click submit when finished.
