Title: Density of Water

1
Density of Water
  • Kathryn Buckingham
  • kbucking_at_nmu.edu

2
Density is
  • Mass per unit volume of a substance, usually
expressed as grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3)
  • Also can be thought of as how heavy something is
    for its size.
  • Example something with low density is
lightweight for its size and something with high
density is heavy for its size.

3
Two major effects on Density
  • Salinity (amount of salt) and Temperature
  • An increase in salt increases seawater density
because it adds dissolved substances to the
    water.
  • An increase in temperature decreases seawater
    density because of thermal expansion.
  • Thermal expansion is heat expanding and spreading
    in the water.

4
  • Temperature has the most impact on density
because the variations in temperature are greater
    than the salt variations.
  • Cold water with high salinity levels are some of
    the highest density water sources.

The density of water is
  • 1000 kg/m3 (or 1 g/cm3 )
  • Here is a site with 150 different liquids and
    their densities.
