Title: International Standardization Activity on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
1International Standardization Activity on Energy
Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- Growing concerns on environment, energy security,
economic sustainability - Challenges to meet future energy needs in a
sustainable manner
Both IEC and ISO initiated activities on energy
efficiency and renewable energy sources
2Establishment of Specialized Groups on Energy
Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- IEC/SMB
- Established Strategic Group 1 in February 2007
- - Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,
Spain, UK, USA - - First meeting held in May at DKE, Frankfurt
- ISO/Council

Korea, Malaysia, Slovenia, UK, USA IEA, IEC - - First meting held in June at ISO/CS, Geneva
3Outcomes of Discussions by the Groups
- Both IEC and ISO groups reconfirmed the
importance of the issue of energy efficiency
(renewable energy as well by ISO) - Agreed to conduct detailed portfolio/gap analysis
of international standards and related activities
as a first step
- IEC to continue the Strategic Group 1 - ISO to
create a Strategic Advisory Group under the TMB
4Next Steps
- Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy involve
- - Huge range of technologies and products
including horizontal issues such as energy
management - - Different types of players and stakeholders in
both developed/developing countries
Cooperation/collaboration among relevant
organizations will be vital in future
activities IEC, ISO, IEA, WEC, UNIDO, etc.
