  • A. The President is not directly elected by the
    citizens, but by the Electoral College
  • B. The Founders wanted the President to be strong
    enough to fulfill his responsibilities, but not
    able to overpower the other branches and endanger
    peoples rights
  • C. Congress was given a check for most of the
    listed powers in Article II

  1. Appointments- The President can select Supreme
    Court justices, cabinet members and ambassadors,
    but the Senate must approve
  2. Treaties The President may write a treaty, but
    the Senate approves or rejects
  3. War The President is Commander in Chief of the
    armed forces, but only Congress can declare war
  4. Veto The President can veto laws, but Congress
    may override with a 2/3 majority

  • The House of Representatives must first decide if
    there is enough proof to accuse the President of
    crime
  • If the House decides a crime has been committed
    the President is tried by the Senate
  • The trial is presided over by the Chief Justice
    of the Supreme Court
  • If the President is found guilty, he is removed
    from office
