Title: ECOSYSTEMS

1
ECOSYSTEMS
  • all the living organisms and their non-living
    environment within a given area

2
ECOSYSTEM SIZE
  • There is no limit to how large or small an
    ecosystem can be
  • An ecosystem can be as large as an ocean or as
    small as a puddle
  • Very large ecosystems are known as biomes.

3
STRUCTURE OF AN ECOSYSTEM
  • There are two components of an ecosystem
  • the living component (biotic)
  • the non-living component (abiotic)

4
the living component (biotic)
  • includes all ORGANISMS ( animals, plants and
    microbes )
  • Each organism has a niche or profession
  • Each organism has a habitat or address

5
the non-living component (abiotic)
  • air
  • water
  • rocks
  • soil
  • temperature
  • sunlight

6
NICHE
  • The relationship between an organism and
  • its environment, including both the biotic and
    abiotic factors
  • It is an organisms profession EXAMPLE BIOTIC
1). A lion kills and eats other animals 2).
Certain insects live in the lions skin
and feed on its blood 3). When the lion dies,
scavengers and decomposers use its body
for foodEXAMPLE ABIOTIC 1). When and how
often it reproduces 2). How many offspring it
has 3). When is it most active? 4). Where
    does it find shelter?

7
HABITAT
  • The actual place that an organism livesAn
ecosystem could have more than 1 habitatIt is
    the organisms address

8
SPECIES
  • A group of organisms that are genetically
    similar( similar DNA )
  • Organisms of the same species can reproduce and
    produce fertile offspring

9
POPULATION
  • A group of organisms that belong to the same
species in an ecosystemA population of green
frogs in an aquatic ecosystem, for exampleA
population of white tailed deer in a forest

10
COMMUNITY
  • A group of different populationsA forest
community would include a population of whitetail
deer, a population of gray squirrels, for example
