What is a latrine?

• It is a site or a structure, located either
  within or outside the house or other building,
  destined to receive(deposition) and store
  (retention) excreta and sometimes, to process it

Why do you need a household latrine?People
depending on their economic status assign
different reasons as to why they need a household
latrine. Among the many reasons are the ff

• Privacy
• Convenience/Comfort
• Prestige/Status
• To avoid danger of being bitten by reptiles and
  other dangerous animals
• Good health

Where should latrines be built?

• Should be downhill any water course
• Should be at least 30m (100ft) away from water
  sources
• Should be close to your home/dwelling
• Must be built at sites with firm ground
• It must be away from trees
• Must face the prevailing wind

• Project Benefiaries involvement in planning and
  implementation of latrine projects promote
  latrine use more than the technical soundness of
  the physical structures
• Beneficiary knowledge of the territory should be
  tapped and culture respected.

Operation and maintenance activities

• The use of soft anal cleansing materials
• Putting of all anal cleansing materials into pit
  (do not keep a busket in the latrine)
• Cleaning of slab and toilet seat
• Always close the door except when entering or
  leaving the latrine.
• Inspect the fly screen periodically

Cont-operation and maintenance activities

• Pour water down the vent pipe occasionally to
  remove cobwebs
• Cut of all tree branches that obstruct light and
  wind movement over the top of the vent pipe.
• Dont cover the squat hole
• Make a small mound to drain away rainwater.
