SCORING
  • Possible Score 1-6
  • 3.5 is Passing
  • Score 0 if it is unreadable
  • 50 will get Expository
  • 50 will get Persuasive

FOCUS
  • Read the prompt and circle key words.
  • Make sure you write only about what you are asked
    to write about in the prompt.
  • Have a clear main idea and stick to it.
  • Have a clear point of view, theme, or unifying
    event.
  • Consistently write about the topic.
  • Dont include information that doesnt completely
    relate to the topic.
  • If its a persuasive topic, pick one side and
    stick to is.

ORGANIZATION
  • Have a beginning, middle and end.
  • Must be a minimum of a 5 Paragraph Essay.
  • Have ideas in your body paragraphs that relate.
  • Indent each new paragraph.
  • Use transitions.
  • Start your essay strong to grab the readers
    attention.
  • End strong to make a good last impression before
    your paper is scored.

SUPPORTING IDEAS
  • You must have QUALITY and detailed supporting
    ideas.
  • Provide examples that relate to the topic.
  • Tell stories that bring the essay to life.
  • If you dont relate to the topic very well make
    things up. Its not lying its creative writing!
  • Your word choice must be specific, detailed and
    vivid. Paint the picture with words.
  • To get from a 3 to a 4 you must have strong
    vocabulary words or excellent word choice.
  • Edit for stronger words. Replace words like cold
    with words like chilly or frigid.

  • Check for proper punctuation.
  • Check for capitalization.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Check word usage There, their and theyre
  • Check for complete sentences.
  • Mark your paper up this is a rough draft.
