    definition of leadership

    leaders?

  • What do we mainly see about leadership through
    this lens?
  • What do we miss by seeing leadership through
    this lens?
  • Does it matter/so what?

9
So what does all of this mean?
  • There are conservatively.
  • More than 300 definitions of leadership
  • Over 2000 books written on leadership
  • In recent times there has been several different
    leadership styles such as
  • authoritative, transactional, transformational
    and instructional
  • Todays leaders are generally pedagogical
leaders (instructional) we have little choice

10
The Leadership Paradigm Shift
  • From having a vision to a particular type of
    vision
  • From weak research link to research informed
    leadership and teaching
  • From leadership style to particular
    leadership practices
  • From organisational leadership to educational
    leadership
  • From one leader to distributed leadership
  • And today we even have our own model the KLP
  • Viviane Robinson (2004). New Understandings of
    educational leadership.

So What?My mix of theory and practice
  • OK so you have an idea of what leadership looks
like and maybe how you fit into the picture. You
probably know what your predominant style is and
now youve also been told that you have to be a
    pedagogical leader.
  • You are also aware that at times you have to be
another type of leader or use a different style -
    so where to from here?
  • My view is the most important thing is about
    being yourself
  • Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses, and
defaults, are will help you to become a more
    proficient leader

15
Relationships
  • 80 of the job
  • Knowing who you are be who you are
  • You probably wont get a principalship because
of your admin skills but you probably will
    because of your relationship skills
  • Emotional competence
  • Setting the culture
  • Listening (2 ears 1 mouth)
  • Difficult conversations

16
ManaakitangaLeading with moral purpose
  • Good leaders believe that they can make a
    difference
  • Nurturing the human spirit - growing others
  • Whilst there are lists of specific skills
identified as being crucial it is your underlying
    beliefs which shape your actions
  • You need to dig deeper than just being task
    focused
  • Work on your relationship skills - relationships
    are crucial
  • How can you lead without the big picture?

17
Lead the Learning.
  • The leader cannot succeed in isolation. The
greatest and most common effects the leader can
make are the indirect ones where they are
involved in modeling, monitoring and having
    professional conversations with their staff.
  • Viviane Robinson, has produced international
research which shows that school leaders do have
    an impact on student outcomes.
  • Robinson has identified 5 specific leadership
practices which have the most effect on
    influencing student outcomes
  • Establishing goals and expectations
  • Strategic resourcing
  • Planning, coordinating and evaluating teaching
    and the curriculum
  • Promoting and participating in teacher learning
    and development
  • Ensuring an orderly and supportive environment

18
Other suggestions
  • You dont have to have the answers
  • but be ready to make a decision
  • Put on your own oxygen mask first
  • Self belief
  • You are the leader be comfortable with it
  • Kiwi humour - also at your own expense
  • Classroom control is critical before anything
    else can happen

19
Other suggestions
  • Lets educate the students for their future not
    our past
  • What has this got to do with teaching and
    learning?
