What is Photosynthesis?

• The process by which a plant turns light energy
  from the sun into chemical energy in the form of
  sugar.
• Happens within all plants.

Structure of the Plant Photosystem

• Chloroplast site of photosynthesis and starch
  formation
• Thylakoid the structural unit of photosynthesis
• Flattened sacs/vesicles that contain
  photosynthetic chemicals
• Stacked like pancakes
• These stacks are called
  grana

• Within the thylakoid membranes is the chlorophyll
  which gives plants the green color
• Stroma spaces between grana

• Transforms light energy from the sun into
  chemical energy that can be used by plants
• Takes elemental carbon from the atmosphere and
  turns it into a solid form
• Produces oxygen
