Existing Power Stations

• Slough HP have invested 30 million and doubled
  their green output (heat and power)
• Dedicated wood combustion 38MWe from 3 boilers
  and 2 turbines
• Saving 160,000 tonne coal pa
• Makes Slough the UKs largest green energy
  producer

Number of small community projects

• Some successes, mostly small heat only
• Each of importance but will not make a
  significant contribution towards targets
• Hearts and minds contribution very worthwhile
  nevertheless

The reality for the SE England

• The powerhouse of England
• Implementing renewables (including biomass CHP)
  in the SE is tough
• Major planning problems likely to continue in
  rural areas (visual intrusion, transport
  movements, emissions .)
• Key will be to re-energise our towns and cities
• Link to re-generation and new build
• Biomass-cogen is the most likely major
  contributor onshore

Two options?

• Rely on local democracy winning through and
  provide education and information to make the
  current (planning) system work more effectively
  in favour of sustainable change, create flagship
  exemplars etc.
• Impose a solution centrally and circumvent local
  democracy

Tell the truth and shame the devil

• To win the hearts and minds argument
• Provision of LOCAL factual information
• Make projects accessible and real
• Record the WHOLE story, not just the successes
  but the failures too
• Social and environmental as well as technical
  information
• Provide predictions of renewable energy uptake
  based on simple scenarios (e.g. business as
  usual)
• Illustrate best practice through LOCAL case
  studies
• Build on and work with existing national and
  supra-national initiatives

A Regional RESTATS

  sub-regions working with regional partner
  agencies

• All but 1 of the English Regions represented
• Each will have a view on how they are handling
  renewable energy and whether there is a need for
  a SWE-STATS, NWE-STATS ..
• Some other regional initiatives are underway
• Should we collaborate and come up with a solution
  which works for us all?

• What are the issues? (e.g. data sharing,
  boundaries)
• What do we need to do next?
